I was reading the FAQ (here) and say the following table: CPU/NETWORK 128kbit 256kbit 512kbit T1(1.4Mbit) > 2Mbit 10Mbit > T3(45Mbit) PIII 500 2 4 8 12 12 PIII 800 2 4 8 20 20 PIII 1300 2 4 8 24 32 PIV 2000 2 4 8 24 64

but then the faq went on to say:

THE SERVER WILL CONSUME 85 TO 100% OF YOUR CPU. This means YOU CANNOT RUN AN INTERNET SERVER ON AND PLAY FROM THE SAME MACHINE. SERVERS MUST BE DEDICATED FOR OPTIMAL AND PROPER PERFORMANCE.

Is it true that I must have a single machine dedicated to battlefiled 1942 alone?

If a pIII 500 can host a server, why couldn't an Athlon 2100+ host battlefield and a HL server or two?

Can I use CPU priority settings to give preference to the HL servers which typically only occupy ~10% CPU usage when operating on a AthlonXP 2100+.

If I had dual CPU's would I be able to host more than one game server?

I'm on an OC3 connection so bandwidth isn't a problem, but I would really like to run a battlefiled server just for fun... I need to be able to run the HL servers.

btw, im not planning on playing from the server.. which seems like what that statement was implying...

I just want to know if I have to buy another server just to host battlefield 1942.. if I do then forget it, it's just poor programming bloat. They could atleast make seperate modes for dedicated hardware vs coop hardware.

I ran tribes & tribes2 servers from the same box. Now that I run BF1942 from the box running all 3 games or even 2 is out of the question

what kind of specs do you have on this box? RAM, CPU, internet connection?

well...the cpu is only a 500mhz, my connection USED to be a dual OC3 backbone, now I think it's a 10MB pipe (?) as far as ram..let me go check.......................523,568 KB RAM

hmm.. that doesn't seem surprising... 500mHz is the minimum recomended for bf1942...

while a 500mHz could easily runs tribes, HL, unreal, etc...

What I'm trying to figure out is if the documentation I read was correct in the statement it made or whether it was generalizing... it seems to me that when I read the statement.

THE SERVER WILL CONSUME 85 TO 100% OF YOUR CPU. This means YOU CANNOT RUN AN INTERNET SERVER ON AND PLAY FROM THE SAME MACHINE. SERVERS MUST BE DEDICATED FOR OPTIMAL AND PROPER PERFORMANCE.

That it was implying that someone might be trying to play the game on the same machine running the server. I will obviously not be trying to do any such thing. I just want to be able to run a couple servers from the same computer. (something that's easily possible with any other game server made)

btw, i would run a test trial, but every copy of the linux bf1942 server i've downloaded has already expired...

Is the game that new that they don't have a linux server ready?

I have played the demo and really enjoy the game, however I don't know if I'm interested in purchasing it if I can't host my own server. (This should say something about the quality of most bf1942 servers on the internet.)

i'm not asking about linuc, im asking about bf1942 servers.. whether on win32 or on Linux... I could easily use win32, but I want to know if bf1942 will run with other servers on the same machine... period...
