My problem from late december is here again.

My problem is that when I start FH2 or BF2 the screen turns black and then shuts down. It won't start. I made a video to help you understand what has happened. The "yes or no" options I get are since I erased the cache folders (that many others have had problems with), and it asks if I should continue, but the problem is not because of that. and then I also get the message If I want to report the crahs to the FH team.

Last time, my problem lasted for about 2 weeks, when my father unplugged the computer and it for some reason crashed and we had to reformat it (erase HDD and install windows XP again), then when I installed BF2 it worked, I haven't had the problem since.

I appreciate any help I can get, and no, reinstalling the game (BF2 as well) doesn't work.

Not sure if this part of the BF2 tweakguide might help:

Launching/Loading Issues: The most common problem with BF2 is that the game crashes to desktop or goes to a black screen when you first launch it. The reason for this is either incompatible hardware (make sure you meet all the minimum specs), or more usually the fact that you're not running at the default Windows XP refresh rate (60Hz). By default the game tries to launch at 800x600@60Hz initially, so your system must be able to run that same resolution and refresh rate, otherwise the game will abort. If you are using any refresh rate override program/method, disable it (e.g. if you're using Refresh Force, click the 'Restore Original Settings' button and apply). Alternatively, see the Advanced Tweaking section of the guide for details on how to set a different startup resolution, in case your graphics card/monitor simply cannot do 800x600@60Hz resolution. Once you've got the game running, you can then change the resolution to suit your taste in the in-game settings, and importantly you can select a higher refresh rate. Then you can reapply any refresh rate override and the game will launch without any problems. To set a non-standard resolution see the Advanced Tweaking section.

This looks like the refresh rate issue I had with BF2 a couple of years ago.

I had the game for about a year and reformatted and reinstalled Windows XP, and all of a sudden BF2 stopped working. The BF2 splash screen would come up and crash right back to desktop. After two weeks of going back and forth with EA's tech support (Do you have the game patched? Have you run a virus scan? Do you have the latest video drivers?), I found the above article on Tweakguides and that sorted it out immediately.

Note that this was happening in 2006, way before any significant mods were released for BF2.

Good luck.

I want to thank you all for trying to help! I'll be back later to tell if your suggestions worked or not, now though I can't find my CD-key when I want to install BF2 (uninstalled it just to be sure), but know I have it written down somewhere.

just wanted you to know that your suggestions won't be ignored!

I have a similar problem, before it was also with the yes or no menu before starting. Then I just reinstalled, that worked.

But now FH2 and BF2 just doesn't work anymore, right after launching the whole thing crashes.

So is there a way without reinstalling everything, that gets tiresome.

Like described in my first post and seen in some other answers it looks like a refresh rate issue. Updating the drivers should reset any custom refresh rate settings to default and making BF2 run again.
