You need to think what your ground is like - rock, earth, grass etc. Do earth/rock texture around the whole crater then add dark and light scorch marks in a star shape radiating out from the middle of the crater. Take a look at the FH ones for a great guide.

Plus make sure to add some ground piles around the crater as they would be thrown out of the impact location. Actually tough the FH ones are nice looking, do realy craters had such perfect star like explosion burned surfaces?

THANKS!!!!!!!!!! *is happy that people care*

However, what design do I use to make the star shape (circle 4x4, pixel 1x1, etc . . . )?

Circle for middle, pixel for edges. I would also suggest not just totally darkening the surface but trying something like this. Make the crater nad first paint the ground inside of it, it should be darkened. Next darken the middle of impact and add lighter lines or totally paint the ground around the center. Again paint the edges of impact with much darker black color. Here you can make some star like lines. Add thrown out ground.
