Ok, now there seem to be already three types of communities each with their own idea of having a fan mappack, seperately from FH.
This is meant to combine fan maps and make sure they will all be played. For example, if you release a map seperately, hardly anyone will notice or download it at all, no matter how nice the map is. This is a shame offcourse. Also, because many good maps never make it to the deadline of official instances, (like mine), this is where the community fills up the gap.
I was thinking that we should organize this much better. I've seen and spoken to several people, but it appears no one has anything done. This is due to bad communication and organization. I, Kingrudolf, an arrogant, but skillfull mapper, would like to help us lead this mappack. It is supposed to be an imposing, but friendly community mappack. We shall give everyone a chance and every possible help we can give to submit their map to the pack.
Here are the basic rules and ideas:
Three main program leaders to organize the bit, possibly also judge and comment on which maps are fit and ready to go for a release in the pack.
The mappack will feature quality maps. If your map is "rejected", we will not slap you in the face and turn you down, but provide constructive critisizm, and we will all help eachother into forming each and every individual's map to become high quality.
With your "quality" map in this pack, will not only raise its reputation, and get a considerate reputation worthy the public's interest and confidentely downloaded and played on public servers, but will also put your name higher in the ranks, which is offcourse is great, to see your hard work appreciated so much.
Like I mentioned before, sometimes a map will not be ready yet for immediate release. We must scramble and unite our skills, forming a solid community, with much more dedication than dead links to tutorials, and a single forum as we have now. I noticed we already have plenty of offers for testing servers, and I could even arrange a forum myself. If you wish, I can design a Flash site for news updates.
I don't really have much time for mapping anymore. But I do find the time enough to help this build. That's why I think I would at least qualify in helping you people lead this business to the top.
I know there are a lot of mappers, modelers and skinners out there, but they never seem to get a hold of eachother. If you are looking forward in doing some serious good will and pleasure, please do reply in this topic!
i would be interested in contributing a map, and helping with general organisation :)
would there be a running theme to the pack?
Wanna go Double Dutch?

the idea is nice indeed, and recently a bunch of germans started working on a community mapping site. It still isnt done however (i think), but i'm sure they also contacted you KR about this.
Some additionial plan information:
Required for a smooth communication we need;
- A webpage - Forums - Hosting space for maps and the webpage - A domain name
I can design the webpage myself, no problem. I can also arrange the forums, but hosting space for maps I can not. I'm also not sure about the domain name. There are free, popup-free domain names, but I have to sort it out. I was thinking of something solid, simple and distinct; for example www.FHCMP.com (Forgotten Hope Community MapPack). This will also be the reference name to our community.
I guess there is not really a theme to be able to be used right now. Although I really like the idea, which could definetely improve teamwork, as of right now there are too many different projects going on (as far as I know), but if we ever collect enough maps and ideas we can start using themes; if everyone wants to offcourse.
I was a little too busy a few weeks ago so I took a rain check with the "Germans". I hope they will be in touch with us again soon!
Well - I know you are waiting for the Fanmappack #2. I promise it will be released within the next 3 weeks. Furthermore we will start to collect maps for frequent fanmappacks soon as we want to make Fanmaps more supported. Anyway - I really am in favour for your idea!
Wait a second, I got an email like a day or so ago about a request for some graphics for a mapping website, is this it or something else?
I sure am interested in the mapping bit. ;)
Well honestly I kinda want the mappack to have a good name, people are often put off when they hear the "fan" part of fan mappack. I know it's kinda odd, but even I have a tiny bit of that feeling inside of me. I guess it was the 0.5 fan mappack that gave it a bad name.
Furthermore I intend to work independantly of FH. Offcourse this sounds kinda odd, since it's FH maps we would create. But I never seem to get straight with ArminAce and this really pisses me off sometimes. Unfortunately I've heard similar opinions, but I'm not here to bash anyone. I merely want to state that I would like to create a "free for all" mappack with good dosis of dignity. Benefits of join the community mappack would be for example, that we share static textures with eachother, or models, coding, anything. But if you retract your map from the mappack, you would offcourse have to do without the shared "goodies".
This way we can make sure everyone will get what he deserves, and everything stays friendly. Moreover, it should boost popularity and make the community grow. The more quality maps, the more happier people!
I think it's really good to hear from your support Bugs. You are very friendly towards the community, but in the end it's still Armin who "decides". Sometimes if you would say yes, he would say no. And no one would know until it's too late, because you are basically the PR guy.
But you can help us out here anyway! If you wish, until we've actually set up our community, in order to cinvince you and get your trust, hopefully you might consider slowly letting us do your work. Or simply put; we will handle the fan maps for you. It would add sugar on top if you could then support us in making the FH players out there aware of the community mappack's existence.
Oh yeah. I also remind the "rules" that have been set up by the FH devs for submitting content to FH. I have some very good reasons for example, to not to submit my map to the offical FH maps: I am forced to agree that I submit all of the content to the FH mod and that all content will become theirs. I cannot retract any content once submitted. FH mod keeps its right to modify submitted content.
This means I can't even change fog distance if I requested and denied. Hell, any FH dev could totally mess up my map (in my eyes) and there's not a damn thing I can do about it! So much for appreciation. I understand the issues with MC, so that's why we've ended at a dead end here. But here's where I for one would like to help out with the community map pack.
Cool: It wasn't me who send the email. Maybe one of the "Germans"?

You know, I think it might of been. It's just the email I received has pretty much the same goal you're aiming for so I thought it may be someone from your team. If not, no big deal.
May of just been a coincidence, but if you're looking for someone to make a few banners or whatever you know I'm here.
Yes indeed. The "fan" spooks the public. That is why I am afraid to discover the fact that I have to play the fan mappack #2 maps only in coop as no servers apart from FtN will host them. :( Which sucks major buttocks as I would love to see how the map taichi and I worked on would work in publics. Also, if FH devs could slam in the word "Official" in the mappack's name, it would be hosted too. But as their fan-maps, i doubt "Official Fan Mappack #2" would sound that good. ;)
