Hi folks! The guys over at Forgotten Maps are running beta tests of my Cretan Village map and Lili Marlene's update of Scharfenburg's Nuenen. cretanheader2wf.jpgnuenenheader7pz.jpg The tests will be on Thursday 26th May at 1800 GMT and Saturday 28th May at 1400 GMT. It would be great to get as many people taking part as possible to support these mappers and to give them feedback on their work. Well I just took a run around both maps by creating a server with myself. Nuenen I thought was nice, roughly compareable to Neunen in the map pack 4, by that I don't mean the same at all, but in feel, wide streets (these have cobblestone sidewalks, and saw some nice new bridges), anyhow it looked nice. What really shined to me was the Cretan Village map. Wow, that's a really beautiful map I must say, very nicely done I'm really looking forward to that. Nice touch with the JU-52's flying in formation overhead. I also like the little stonewall boxed in vineyards near some of the houses, nice touch, gives tonnes of atmosphere.

Nice work on the Cretan map (haven't seen the other yet) I'm looking forward to play that map with others!... I like the atmosphere, but have a few complaints... First of all the mineret! It's okay to use a mineret on Crete as the Ottomans left a lot of those, but in all the years i've visited crete I've never seen one which still had the Half Moon symbol! And most minerets on Crete are in the major towns of Chania (Xania), Rethymnon (Rethimno) or Herakleon (Iraklio). A suitable church for a cretan village would look more like this: sitia_mountains.jpg Then there's the mountains... they're nice, but the slopes on cretan mountains are mostly covered by olive trees. These would give the map soo much more atmosphere and perhaps even make it a better infatry map, as you'll stand a better chance against those rifles and machine guns at longer ranges if you have some cover! Thanks for the comments Blame Canada - it's great to get some feedback! I did think of doing all of the things you suggested but there were reasons I didn't/couldn't: - the mosque - I've seen the old disused mosques in southern Crete (where the map's set) in town of Ierapetra. Ideally I would have had a Greek Orthodox church but there isn't one in FH and I can't model so I couldn't make one myself or remove the crescent moons form the mosque. So if someone wanted to make a Greek Orthodox church for me I could update the map... :) - the trees - with all the bushes I wasn't sure about lag so I decided to limit the number of trees used. Once again ideally I would have used cypress trees, date palms and cacti but none exist and I can't make them (except for the cypresses in RtR but I was told they couldn't be used...) - mountain-side villages - I would have really like to have one of these! However the Battlefield terrain system doesn't make it very easy to "sink" buildings nicely into the hillside.

Ok I got some comments :)

The map was really well layed out, It had amazing atmoshphere and the sound effects on the map get a 10/10 for me!

However the fact the Germans only spawn in one area could lead the British to abandon there souther bases and all group around the German para spawn which would lead to a massacre and an unfair game.

My solution would be to have 3 german para spawns, one where there already is one, one down the south of the map, nearly in the sea and one not too far away from the British held town.This will help spread the British forces out so theres a fight raging in all corners of the map and not just one, this was how it really was in crete.

I would also like the German parachute to open as soon as possible, not only to stop accidental deaths but also to stop people free falling and then opening there chute 2 feet off the ground which is pretty lame and unrealistic.

Could you also give all German classes a pistol to start with, preferably a luger, all German paratroops on Crete only dropped with a pistol and colelcted rifles and smg's from the ground, this off course would not work in bf1942 but maybe you could include a pistol in at least assault and close quarters class.

If you've ever played Otokilos's pegasus bridge day map yo may have noticed a really cool feature he added which was kits in the bunker containing a sten and a panzerfaust, the soldier also had no helmet.Maybe you could leave some kits similar to this lying around which only contain a luger and 1 mills grenade? this would represent the Cretan villagers who picked up dead German soldiers weapons and defended the island, if possible the kit should come with no helmet.

Finally I didn't see any dead German paratrooper statics in the map so forgive me if I missed it but maybe you could add this static, I'm pretty sure the static is found on Alpenfestung and a few others, it'd add even more atmosphere since almost 1 in 5 Germans were shot and killed before they landed, usually having there chute tangled in trees, if something like this could be added to your map it'd be really cool.

Anyway, great map, I'll try and be there for the beta tests on Thursday and Saturday!

Cool, thanks! -the Germans do get further para spawns later in the game once certain flags are captured... The closeness of the British to the German start is to try and encourage team-work(!) - the Germans will have to defend their first flag until they have enough men on the ground to be able to send some off to get the other flags - the Brits will have to keep this in mind and defend these other points too. -I will add the instant parachute opening when I find out how... anyone know? I have it on the other set of paraspawns but I don't know what makes that happen! -the idea with the only starting with a pistol and a coupe of grenades for the paras is a good one (accurate too) but it would mean placing lots of random kits around the place - I don't think that would look too good. -I think I found the dead para static when I was making the map and it turned out to be American... Thanks again for the comments! :)

Sorry for all these ammendments! Just a quick note/warning to those who haven't found out yet - when you spawn at the German main base you are in mid air with no parachute - you need to press '9'/open your parachute otherwise you will go splat... This has been fixed so that chutes open as soon as you spawn in the next version...

You can download dead German statics from some topicI seen along with custom pavements.

If you search the mapping forum you'll find the topic.
