I finally started working on the arnhem bridge model, starting in the north with the viaduct, note that i only started modeling this yesterday early in the evening. U have three scaled buildig/construction plans of the bridge which are very very useful, expect this bridge to be an exact copy of the actual arnhem bridge. Expect the viaduct to be done in 2 weeks or so, i have no plans of the bridge itself yet but i try to get my hands on a copy of them (either via a very friendly person i know or else by going to the city/profincial-archives) if not i will have to do the bridge using pictures as the only source :( . http://photobucket.com/albums/v142/donitz/arnhem/
Thanks to Dönitz's tutorial I managed to create my first custom object. It's a german pillbox like they were build in large numbers at the Westwall. Right now I can't get any further in the process, since I can't find any useable skinning tutorials. If someone has an easy to understand, step by step tutorial,I'd be glad if you could post a link. Thats how far I came. I know it's very simple. But it's my first model ever.
looks nice! I would say try to keep the poly count around 600-700 (it has an interior but the overall shape is very simpel).
For all those that didn't get the it in the tutorial: Before using the boleaan tool attach as many objects together as you can. If you want to make 5 windows on a sigle side of a building and boleaan them one by one the poly count will be much higher then when you first attach those 5 windows together and then boleaan them out of the wall!!
Seems like you (knoffhoff) did quite well finding the balance between extruded parts and "attached" parts (seperate objects that you attach lateron). Note tha i'm new at modeling myself so dont look at e as an expert on this, for advanced help ask an FH dev (aces, malsa etc.), that is atleast what i did.
