You need to edit the heightmap and texture of your surrounding terrain to get rid of that green stuff. I suggest to also don't have flags right on the corner of the map, since even after doing heightmaps and textures the surrounding terrain will look quite nasty, because of it's lower resolution. Try to focus on the middle of the map and don't have any main combat areas in view distance of the map border.

Ugh, no, that's not normal. Sometimes working in the heightmap one of the surrounding patches gets totally screwed like in your pic, you could flatten again the patch but that's a long and painful work to do in a patch of 1024 pixels size. The best is have always a backup of your map to replace the fubared patch.
