Alrighty then. As you may know, I and a few others are working on a map based on the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, in was part of the larger Operation Tempest, an offensive by the Polish Home Army, or AK, that would drive the Germans out of Poland and set of a government loyal to the Polish government in exile in London. The revolt lasted 63 days from August to October 1944, and ultimately failed due to Russia's refusal to aid the Polish. The map itself is around 50% done. 50=60% of the buildings have been placed, basic terrain is finished, and the kits have been coded. All that's left is terrain-fine tuning, placing the remaining buildings, props such as sandbags, tables, etc, vehicles, and making some textures and skins. Even have a loading screen in case you haven't seen it. The map is based on an area of Warsaw in which the first German counterattack took place. It will be much like Arnhem, in that the Germans must enter and retake the city from the Polish defenders. Arnhem minus the bridge, in a nutshell. There are plenty of streets for armors to roam, and long corridors where tank battles are all but guaranteed. While I will try to add debris in the streets for infantry cover, I have already added numerous alleyways for soldiers to use to duck out of the way of incoming tanks, as well as traverse the city by entirely different routes, and even to areas tanks cannot go. German equipment is the standard Close Quarters: MP40 Rifle: K98 AT: Panzerfaust 30 Support: MG42 Engineer: K98 Polish equipment was a mottled assembly of stolen equipment, as well as stuff collected from Allied airdrops. Close Quarters: StenMK5 (Should be MK2) Rifle: K98 AT: Piat Support: Bren Engineer: K98 I have been informed that as of 0.65, random loadouts are do-able, so the Poles will likely be fixed to reflect their varied equipment whenever 0.65 comes out. Poles stole most of their vehicles from the Germans, so will be getting German Armor for themselves. Things they stole that are included in the game are: 2x Panthers 1x JagdPanzer 1x Tiger 2x Sd.kfz.251 D (Hanomags with rocket arty) and a number of armored cars, including Hanomags. Of those, what should I put in? I need your opinions. I wouldn't mind adding them all, and having Panther vs. Panther, Tiger vs. Tiger. The Germans had the entire Third Reich behind them, so were not lacking for equipment. As for Uniforms, Poles in the AK army had a sort of camo outfit, as well as a green uniform. The camo is the only one skinned at the moment, but Englishboy is working on more. The Poles also had a few helmets that were standard. They also had a garrison cap rather like the Russian pilotka, and also berets were common. The beret, at least, will be added. Germans consisted of both regular Wermacht and SS 3rd Division. If I can get a random uniform code to work properly, then Germans will spawn randomly as either Wermacht or SS. Finally.... SCREENSHOTS. Screenshot1 Just a random sidestreet. I know that these are the same old boring vanilla buildings, but getting new ones in slow going without good texture artists. For now, the only new thing is the sidewalks, which look horrible now because they lack a good texture. Nechre is working on that, I believe. And there you have the work thus far. Gimme some opinions, and tell me what to do with the vehicles.

It looks nice, you need to use ed42 textures though. The sidewalks need a real skin and you probably want to use some other skins on the b uildings too (or even better yet, replace as many buildings as possible for custom onces). If i where you i would also add poster, street signs and other low poly objects to your map, these are small objects but they at a lot of atmosphere. My map for example will contain streetsigns and posters among other things.
The map looks pretty good so far, although the trainyard kinda looks like a trainyard on a model train diorama. But that is probably due to the ugly ground texture.
How about some barricades with flags ?

Hmm the ground textures suck, don't take any offence since you didnt make them (?). That long road, I doubt there are such roads without smaller side roads connecting. Also if that's an avenue, it should be a little wider since trolleys would go in the middle and cars on each side etc. It looks kinda strange without all the statics but I'm sure you'll get to that. I just love this drawing although it's warsaw 1939 Polish did capture a Hetzer, not sure how to represent this in Fh yet... Germans used Brummbärs and Sturmtigers, so put in a Brummbär. Or maybe you were thinking along something like this: In that case you should use cobblestone ground textures and maybe try to curve the street a little. Remember that during the uprising Warsaw was basicly destroyed so there should atleast 50% of destroyed buildings. Notice the street car tracks.
Yes, I almost forgot about the posters and streetsigns and stuff. Those will be added as well along with props, etc. Like I said, the basic terrain is done. Basic meaning using vanilla BF terrain textures.. I am going to alter it once I get all the objects placed, so I will know exactly where I am to put the new textures. The avenue, yeah, might probably be a little wider. It can already accomodate three tanks sitting side by side, not counting the sidewalks. Also, I am adding impassable barricades at some of the map edges, and some in town to prevent tanks, from crossing, but not deter infantry. I just haven't decided where all I will place them. And heh, yes, the Poles did capture the tanks from the n00b German bailers :p. I just use the two terms capture and steal more synonymously. Thanks for the opinions. Thanks Jagd. Re-done Trainyard I completely replaced the Vanilla terrain in Editor42, added some tire tracks, and cinders around the tracks. Hope you guys think that looks better.
I like the map idea.
However.. looks like it needs a lot of work.
That city looks way too frickin' empty. I'm not talking about rubble, wrecks and stuff like that, but the map looks just like Arnhem. In fact, in one screen the ground texture looks identical to the Arnhem one. The last thing you want is an Arnhem copy. There is so little cover, with such long streets with no side roads. I suggest you plant some trees alongside the road, fences, small yards, etc.
Could use a bunch more wrecked buildings, some dug in positions, but mostly you need to create that civilian vs. axis mayhem, that'd mean improvised civilian vehicles, wrecks, and a lot of other crap. I wouldn't use the British kit layouts, just use the German ones like on Fall Weiss. And the armour suggestion is terrible. 2 Panthers, a Tiger and a damn Jagdpanzer are making the Polish soldiers goddamn Power rangers. I'm sure they've captured all that, but what the Germans opposed must be far outnumbering the Polish.
Honestly, I expected a lot more from the map.. I mean, what's with the cliche dock scene. I've seen it a gazillion times.. a railroad, the wagons, the cranes and crates.. how are those positions important anyway. No armour spawns on any wagons. The streets look like the Arnhem map.. empty, no cover, too clean, too boring.. now I hear you thinking "do you know anything better?", and yes I do! Come to MSN and I'll help ya out. Having mapped the Berlin map for weeks at a time now, I know how to "fill up" the streets by now.
These days ground texturing aren't really anything to look up to anymore, these days it's all about creating that real "city look". I probably sound like an asshole, but I'm always straight forward.
