Uh-oh. Unemployment reaches levels (percentage-wise; raw totals are of course higher) not seen since the inflation disaster of 1983. Which means levels not seen in the lifetimes of a lot of the posters here. Jobless rate bolts to 8.5 percent, 663K jobs lost - Yahoo! Finance

Not an encouraging sign for college students and recent grads. At least we don't have the runaway inflation of the late 70's early-80's. The prime interest rate, that's the best one, got up to 18%! Of course, if we keep printing money with no assests to back it like we're doing right now, we'll be buying SUV's just to haul around the banknotes we need to buy groceries....

This is the exact reason that I'm hiding out here in college, and going to grad school too probably. Just hoping to ride out this administration, and pray for better times ahead :P Not a good time to be a useless history major I guess.

Actually that's not a bad idea. The military has made far more young men than it's ruined. Of course there is the potential KIA and maiming downside....

Far as I know, the military is actually a safer job then many manufacturing jobs.

We're not doing too well either. We've yet to reach Maggie's clusterfuck of 4 million though. I'm just glad I'll be at uni for the next 3-4 years, so by the time I'm out things will have got a little better. It's people finishing this year I feel sorry for.

It sucks... as of a month ago both my parents lost their jobs, and one of them has worked solid for 25 years and had a six-figure salary.

Seems that no one is safe in these times.

Jesus God, hw, that is harsh. Look, I know this is terribly hard, and frightening too, but it will work out. I've been there, and it works out in the end. This will too. God bless your family.
