Courtesey of DXAmped.com Steam Update: DOD:S and HL1:S - Jun 11, 2005 @ 10:00 PM Hey everyone, its time for another Steam news update. Today the folks at Valve are announcing an addition to Half-Life 1 Source as well as telling us what we expect to see in future Steam updates. Let's have a look.
We've been pretty quiet about Day of Defeat: Source in the last few weeks. But new information and images from DoD: Source will be made available starting next week, as we lead to its release. We've been steadily working away on this project, and we're excited to see what everyone thinks of what we've produced.

In the coming weeks we'll also be releasing a Source revived version of Half-Life 1: Deathmatch. People who already own Half-Life 1: Source will receive this as a free download.

Next Saturday, Valve's CEO and founder, Gabe Newell, will be giving the commencement speech at Southern Methodist University's Guildhall, a university program offering course work in game design. Two groups of students enrolled in the program will be releasing the Source MODs they produced during their term. More information on the games they've built is available on their websites:

Eclipse: http://students.guildhall.smu.edu/eclipse/

Samurai Legends: http://students.guildhall.smu.edu/samurailegends/
I'm not sure if the new HL:S addition will pull hardcore HL1 DM fans (like me) away from original HL, but you never know. I am looking forward to seeing what kind of news about DOD:S will be released as I'm sure most people are. Hopefully we will have an open beta within the next few weeks. That's it! You can go back to BF2 now! I know it's not much, and there's no media but I'm sure there are some folks out there that are waiting to see what Valve has done with DoD:Source. I'm kind of excited, if you haven't already noticed Valve has be steadily releasing remakes of Counter Strike Maps for CS:Source so I think this shows promise for DoD:Source.

tell me we don't have to actually pay for Day of Defeat source? I bought HL2 bronze which came with CS source.

Honestly if they make me pay $30 for DOD source I'll slit there throats.

In order to not pay for DoD: Source you had to buy the HL2 Gold package which bundled everything but the kitchen sink, all these details were clearly listed in all the packages available over steam when & before the game was released. :(

New screenshot of DoD Source in the latest Steam update.
For the last couple of months a team at Valve has been working away on Day of Defeat: Source. We'd like to give people some insight into what we've been doing during this time.

The initial plan following the launch of Half-Life 2 was to get a near direct port of the existing Day of Defeat up and running and release it to the community. After this release, the plan was to take the approach of iterating on the art and gameplay of Day of Defeat through the end of the year. We finished this porting work a few months ago, released this version to a small group of beta testers, and then took stock of we were. We didn't feel like the game was good enough from a visual perspective to release.

We decided to rework all of the content of Day of Defeat: Source before the full public release, hoping that people would be happier waiting for the product to ship while we gave DoD the attention it deserved. We hope our assumptions turn out to be accurate.

Here is the first screenshot from dod_flash, which is the first map that has been given this complete art pass. We'll have more things to share over the next few weeks.

In other news, our friends at Softimage are having a modeling contest and offering $25,000 in prizes for the most original and compelling characters produced with the XSI Mod Tool. Submissions will be judged in-game on specific visual and animation criteria. For more, head to the contest’s offical page.
So, I've been working my way through HL2 and got this update on my Steam account. What is DoD exactly?

Another online game like Counterstrike? I haven't tried jumping into that one yet, but I may have to. I was kind of turned off by the buisness about "buying" weapons....

Supposedly, we're to get an "add-on" level for HL2 as well shortly.

You didn't need the gold package to get DoD:S, just the silver package. The only difference between Gold and Silver was that gold had like T-shirts, caps and mousepads and such. You can also buy DoD:S seperately at Steam for like 10$ (I've heard).
