I'm not sure, but I think the age of empires games are easy to mod. at least the second in the series.

Age of Empires III is tricky to mod because you need a very expensive program to add new models and stuff. New skins seem to be easy though. Company of heroes has a program to add new models, but the program used to animate them is not well documented and nobody knows how to use it. I´ve seen a lot of mods for the Total War series, but that may not what you are looking for.

yep, an alternative should be the Total war games (I know they're not RTS games), the developers of the TW games have a lot of faith in modders and really encourages modding for their game.

Rise of Nations, very easy to create new maps, units and skins. Professional modders could make an entire new campaign with storyline. As Tedacious stated, not really a RTS but easy to mod is Rome: Total War. Very easy to adjust things to yourself, if interested in R:TW talk to Archimonde, I believe he once showed that he replaced a R:TW banner with his own.

Rise of Nations was fun, I actually liked it more than the similar Empire Earth because the factions had different building and unit styles. Always sucked to play Japan and have roman/greek style buildings in the bronze age. BTW Empire Earth has a great editor only surpassed by Warcraft III, which is so easy to mod that even I managed to do it.

Your asking too much from RTS games. Squad based AND easy to mod? Impossible. :p And TS, I also love RoN, one of the first games I bought myself. And how can you suck with Japan? Their heavy infantry was super pwning in the early ages :p In Ancient age already a special unit! With extra Attack!

no I meant in Empire Earth, where they had the greek building style which was... not cool. Rise of Nations was cool. Heard the addon added the dutch ;)

Misunderstanding there :p And yes, Greek buildings when playing Japanese is a bit.. dissapointing. RoN his expansion Thrones and Patriots is really great and like you stated it also features the Dutch. Tons of new nations and about 4 new campaigns with an actual storyline. Theres Alexander, Napoleon, Cold War and the European colonization of America. It's what you expect from an expansion, it adds so much new stuff the game feels like new again =p The game can be unrealistic but atleast they tried to add realistic units and stuff, the Dutch ships are a nice add on. German Tiger is actually a KT but thats also a Tiger :p Must buy if you have 5 euros left.
