A new movie about the experiences of the crew of the Battleship Yamato is in release (or close to it) in Japan. WWII cinema freaks may want to keep an eye out for DVD releases with subtitles in your preferred language. From what I can tell, the theme seems to be the tragedy of the worlds most powerful battleship--obsolete before it is even completed--heading out on a futile mission that is doomed from the beginning. This is a bit speculative, since I don't read or speak Japanese, and most of what I have read about it in English has focused on the 1-1 scale reconstruction of the forward half of the deck. Heroic self-sacrifice in a hopeless cause is a common theme in Japanese storytelling however, and this seems to be the main thrust of the plot, which also appears to go into the personal backgrounds of some of the men and officers. It looks a bit melodramatic but interesting. It can't possibly be any worse than Pearl Harbor, in any case. It looks a bit like a mixture of Titanic and Pearl Harbor, at least it has all the elements (sinking ships, action, love story) so it is not exactly my kind of movie. At least it's a war-movie from the other side's point of view for a change :)
Looks interesting. May even have to buy it when it comes on internation DVD release.
