PETER HITCHENS: How China has created a new slave empire in Africa | Mail Online

Basically, the Chinese are making deals with the African govournments, mostly the dictatorships, to exploit them and take their resources, using the african people as essentially slaves. A new imperialism in africa? The Chinese are sending in overseers to run entire work camps of native africans, and there are accounts of beatings and other such punishments, horrible work conditions, and the govournment shutting up anyone who disagrees with the chinese being there.

All in all, not good.

Slavery, imperialism? I always thought that in modern capitalism one would call this "relocation of jobs to countries with more cost-effective conditions". And for that you wouldn't even have to go back to the 19. century, as you only have to go to the 3 n's, nike, nokia and nestle, and innumerous other major enterprises from the "first world". Bear in mind, I am not advocating pro china, I'd just like to point out that pretty often people in our media like to point with their fingers on other countries who are doing pretty much the same as we do.
