Okay, first off, how do you get Maple Syrup out of a keyboard? My sister was eating French Toast at the computer and well... How do you get it out?

Next, my sisters are going off to college soon and my mom wants to get them each a laptop. What kind of laptop do you need to run basic "school" programs (Microsoft Office, etc.) and The Sims 2 and Counter Strike? Preferable if the games could be run lag-free at high settings. My mom needs to know how much money to put away for these laptops as well as the specs needed in the computers.

Thanks in advance.

To run games your going to need more than you basic laptop. Probably $1000+ to run a First Person Shooter. Sims isnt all that hard but CS is where your going to have to make sure you have a good laptop. Make sure you have plenty of ram seeing as The memory hog Vista comes with all new computers Unless you purchase XP and install it on the side. Also note which Graphics card it has.

1000 dollars per laptop is a highly exaggerated price. Check out deals at newegg.com or frys.com, they have some amazing deals and very reasonable base model laptops.

Not sure on the laptops so I won't comment on those.

I had a pop spilled in my keyboard once (the person that did it didn't tell me until they got home and it was already dry ) . I popped off all of the keys and cleaned them because they would stick down or not work at all. Some still don't work but I'm guessing syrup wouldn't cover as much as a pop would. Try rubbing alcohol and a q-tip maybe? Take the keys off and clean where needed.

First, Wash it real well with hot soap and water. Seriously, it doesn't hurt it as long as the it's completely dry when you plug it back in. Second, Turn your oven on to about 425 degrees F and place the keyboard in it... make sure you put lots of foil under it. Let it dry in the oven for about an hour then remove it and let it cool to room temps. Lastly, sprinkle some sugar on it and force feed it to your sister until she coughs up $19.99 for a new keyboard.

LOL, you went from basic school programs to Counterstrike. I think a laptop that could play counterstrike could also do basic school computing.

From what you wrote about how your sister takes care of things, I'd suggest something in the $199 range. forget about Sims or CS... Spilling maple syrup in a laptop is quite a bit more expensive.

As for laptops, why don't you just forsake games and go with a MacBook, thats really the only way to go if for school based laptops.

You could try soaking the keyboard in hot distilled water to dissolve the sugar then blow it out with canned air and let it dry for about a week. If that doesnt work buy new keyboard.

We sell used laptops at work starting at $349 with windows XP that will do most school work.

You can buy new laptops starting at under $500. I would not buy anything less than 1GB of RAM if it has Vista and 512MB for XP, and it needs at minimum a DVD/CDRW combo drive. Most come with DVDRW's now anayways.

Seriously. You guys should go to box, 2 minutes, feel shame. Helping out without getting pics of the sisters first??!? But yeah, these guys have the right idea, dont kill moms bank account, stay cheap. New laptops will probably come with vista so you'll need some chunky ram. I do beleive that cdw still sells laptops with xp on them, I ordered one for a friend about 4 months ago.
