well it´s quite simple. Uncut versions include the movie the way it was intended by the director. Sometimes (and in the case of Steiner this happend nearly everywhere..) scenes get cut out due to their content of violence or sex for example. Either to receive a lower rating and therefore a higher potential of viewers or due to county´s censorship laws.

In the case of Steiner the scenes that are cut mostly are for example the shooting and knifing of Triebich, where you don´t see the bullets hit or the knife go in. The same with the castration (uh, does this word really exist in english?) with the russians. There are a few other scenes that are often shortened or completely cut out. For me as a movie collector cut versions are absolutely useless since they don´t show the movie the director intended to do...fuck the censorship, movies are art! And unfortunately you are right, in the US you´ve got very poor versions of foreign movies, perhaps you should try the ones from the UK, they are mostly of great quality or the ones from here in germany but you probably prefer an english voice track. Just check at www.play.com for UK Discs, they are pretty cheap and a good shop overall.... P.S: Unfortunately I don´t know if the swedish version is cut, but since the scandinavian countrys are quite liberal concerning censorship, it migt be uncut.

Actually, I hate it when they dub the movie in English. I prefer just subtitles, because it feels more authentic, since you're experiencing the movie as it was intended to be. That was one of my biggest complaints about Cross of Iron -- the fact that it was done in English rather than German.

same here. I always watch the original version with subtitles, except for the asian stuff since their language really gives me the creeps... :D Yeah, and you´re right about the Cross of Iron, but you just can´t change it. Maybe you should give the german movie "Stalingrad" about the the end of the 6th Army by director Joseph Vilsmaier a chance, which is actually quite great and done in german. There is a disc out in the US by Fox Lorber which has the german voice track, as far as my sources tell me. Subtitles should come with it anyway i think...or maybe you already know the movie. anyway...

@BAM: No, there are no new scenes in it. What they did with Blade Runner and what you mean is called a Director´s Cut, and is a version re-cut by the director just like he wanted the film to be when he was for example not given the rights for a final cut by the studio or had to keep at a certain length for a cinema release. Steiner was just cut due to the violence in it...

I already have it in my DVD collection--two copies in fact. Stalingrad and Das Boot are my favorite WWII movies, by far. Hopefully Der Untergang will will be just as good.

SilenT AssassiNnow i look like an idiot ,thanks who ever moved it :(

Owned :P I hate the DVD regions aspect... just another cheap excuse to get consumers to pay more. OT now... I tend to agree with MK and most points except that of Steiner... "Steiner, was portrayed more like a tough American Sergeant, always shouting "god dammit" after every other word." Dunno... I think German NCOs shout out "verdammt" a lot of the time... swearing like a trooper isn't something confined to Americans ;). Its only the Brits who have style old boy :D.

Of course, but it was just his persona in general. He didn't look the part, he didn't sound the part, and he was certainly too old for the part.
