Here we have the the situation with Georgia and the US. Now Russia are sending nuclear armed warships into the Carribean.

Old habits die hard eh ?

I think there is a tendency for things to devolve to some pre slime state , but it does not necessarily mean that the situation is anywhere near any kind of worse case scenario.

Yet, I have not heard any voices reminding us that the USA and Russia have been working together in space now since the early 1970's. NASA and RosCosmos ("Rosaviakosmos"") work very closely together on space operations involving the International Space Station.

Some people seem to have terminally damaged memories and the lack of a bullshit detector in world political affairs .

Ever see the film 2010 :Puzzled:?

Im not happy about it at all... This is not a first step for russia, it is a response.

NATO led by the US began a dramatic increase to its naval presence in the Black Sea in mid-August, after Russian refusal to abide by a Russo-Georgian ceasefire plan engineered by French President Nicolas Sarkozy. The NATO flotilla led by the American destroyer USS McFaul already has exceeded ten warships and will reach eighteen vessels in coming days, Kremlin officials citing Russian intelligence said Tuesday. German, Polish, Spanish, and Canadian warships are among the members of the multi-national squadron being assembled in the Black Sea, according to Georgian media reports.

I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, communist subversion, and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

anyway, this is not just a response to NATO putting their flotilla in the black sea, NATO wanted to include Georgia in their organization, and they want to place missile defenses around Russia (in poland for example). of course Russia gets provoked!

Mr. President, I'm not saying we wouldn't get our hair mussed. But I do say... no more than ten to twenty million killed, tops. Uh... depended on the breaks.

I'm aware of who and why they are responding to one another. What astounds me are the incredibly short memories. Presumably they can't remember the wall coming down, Gorbachev, the rise of people politics in Eastern Europe. The narrow missing of "MAD" and the decades long game of cat and mouse that is an extraordinary history of many, many people avoiding that "worst case scenario".

I refuse to give in to the Fear tactics being used, the cynicism inherent in it all, which is why I bought up the ISS. The hope is that actually there are some very shaggy Cold War Warriors on both sides who might come out of the woodwork and go into diplomatic engagement again.

No fighting in the War Room !

Russia (more correctly, Putin) sees the situation thus: the US is coming to the end of an unpopular, increasingly powerless presidency and an even more unpopular and ineffective Congress; with an exhausted and probably overextended military; a populace which seems unwilling to fight for anything; and all of which are probably more concerned about their domestic economic matters than foreign brinksmanship. And Europe, which actually has far more directly at stake, has virtually abandoned responsibility for its own security, instead passing it on the the Americans, who are extremely reluctant to be put in a position where they must stand up to aggressive Russian moves or lose face.

Putin is pushing because he knows he can, and no one will do anything to him. He will only stop when someone pushes back, and convinces him that he's going to get hurt if he keeps it up.
