Something is missing in this. It can't be this rosy. I notice it's not compatible with iPods. Does anyone know if the adverts will be just in the Qtrax site or imbedded in the downloads? Will the Digital Rights managements software merely monitor the Qtrax site...or the individual's use of the songs? Does the potential to monitor the Qtrax customers exist?

There's something here that smells. Remember, this is the industry that is currently suing thousands of average joes and janes for dls of music. It just doesn't pull a 180 like this - completely change its persona. There is a catch somewhere, and it's not just having to watch an ad to dl a song.

Yeah, as much as I'm itching to download this and try it out for myself (Creative Zen FTW! Screw iPods...) I'm with jumjum, I can't imagine that this works with no strings attached...

Has my curiosity piqued like mad though, can't wait to see what cNET and other tech sites say about it...

It is not i-pod compatible, a i-pod compatible version is in the works and due out soon.

They do keep track of what songs are downloaded and how many times they are played and the songs do have DRM so they can track where it came from and how many times it has been traded.

I dont have a i-Pod or a Zune. I have a Compaq H3765 I-Paq PDA with 2GB memory card and can play MP3 and video files. I currently have about 200 songs on my player.

They do ask that you sync up every 30 days so they can upload your playing history.

so with this DRM encryption you can't burn to a disc? I hope there will be ways around that in the future...

I understand we've already ceded any realistic hope of living a truly private life outside of using pristine aliases for everything, or living completely off the grid, including the net. But this sounds terrifying. It's no different than cookies, but still, I do not trust these swine. This is just their way of getting massive, but essentially cost-free, research which will in some way be used to the public's detriment in the future .

Is it? right? lol, I chose it because it's popular. :P) [quote=jumjum;4184279]This is just their way of getting massive, but essentially cost-free, research which will in some way be used to the public's detriment in the future .

Big brother is there to look after us all, don't go against us...*looks Jumjum in the eyes with an unblinking stare*. I understand, but the public has raped the industry a bit. Or you can also look at this from another point of view; those punk teenagers at HMV, A&B sound or wherever you get your music, (it doesn't matter the kids all look and act the same...too cool to do your purchase, etc.) will be out of work. Seriously, they were part of the reason people started filesharing. :P
