I went to the Memorial Service on Aug. 13th: several thousand spectators Smokey's ashes were scattered in the Pacific Ocean near Vancouver, British Columbia on VJ Day (Aug. 15th).

'[21PzStauffenberg']german ww2 heroes die all day, noone remembers them, no one keeps up their successes (because most of them believed in hitler, and yea they lost. Thats the reason i guess)

Stauffenberg, Be aware: Some of us, who had family that fought on the Allied-Side DO remember the Heroes from BOTH sides. Who can deny the accomplishments of Adolf Galland, Erwin Rommel, "Pips" Priller, Joachim Marseille, Michael Wittman (Nazi yes. But damned deadly in a Tank), Gothard Heinrici (Der Giftswerg -I think I spelled it right. You can confirm this), and others? -Not me.:smokin:

Rommel, a brilliant tactician and soldier. Committed suicide when his plot to assassinate Hitler was discovered. I believe thats correct.

SGL1Rommel, a brilliant tactician and soldier. Committed suicide when his plot to assassinate Hitler was discovered. I believe thats correct.

Rommel was approached by the conspirators and asked to join them. Rommel refused but he also did not inform the proper autorities. When the roundups and interrogations began it quickly became known that Rommel had been approached and that he did not inform the authorities. By not alerting the authorities he made himself a accomplice.

Due to his status as a well known hero in Germany it was felt that it would be a major blow to the morale of the German people and possibly incite sympathy to the conspirators so Rommel was offered the choice of suicide and the public would be told he died of war wounds from when his car was strafed, or public trial, execution, and the backlash and stigma it would cause to his family.

Rommel chose suicide.
