A mod for the new Battlestar Galactica series using the game Freespace 2. The Game is now open source and there is now a Open Source project to update it with new graphics and efects and 32 bit color.
It has not been released yet but the screenshots of the WIP seem pretty impressive.

I always thought Freespace 2 was one of the best space combat sims made and thought it looked great but the models are a little rough by todays standards. The new models do look impressive though.

About the Source Code Project FS2_Open / the SCP / Source Code Project
From the time it became apparent that there would be no FS3 the most repeated complaint the community had was that Volition wouldn't release the source code so that the community could work on it themselves. However, Volition did release the source code and many of those within the community with programming experience got to work on it. The result was FS2_open. The project to make FS2_open has come to be known (originally enough) as the Source Code Project (SCP).
FS2_open is not FS3. Instead it is a enhancement of the original Freespace 2 engine. The idea is that by running FS2_open you can play the Freespace 2 main campaign and all the Freespace 2 mods with better graphics, augmented AI and better mod support. In addition to this improvements have been made to several of the games basics to add new kinds of weapons and missions that couldn't be done before. These effects won't show up in the main campaign but will show up when special "Made for SCP" mods begin to appear.
The differences between FS2 retail and FS2_open are fairly extensive. Some think it is almost like playing a new game.
There is also a Babylon 5 mod, A Star Wars mod, and a Winf Commader 1 mod out or in progress.

That looks pretty impressive. Since I started watching the TV show I thought it would be a cool idea to have a BSG game. But I thought the Cylon Raider only had 2 engines in the back and not 3 (even though I'm probably wrong on this anyway). Still looks damn good, and I think I'll have a look at FS2_open.
Here is the Babylon 5 Project website. Being that Im a fanatical B5 fan I have this d/l already. Looks amazing. http://www.3dactionplanet.com/hlp/hosted/babylon/

They had an announcement on the Wolf Servers page that there's a group working on a Battlestar mod for BF2.
Now, if the enemy all look like #6, I'll be all over that....
There is also someone wanting to do Freespace 2 on the BF2 engine. It would have space and land combat like Galactic Conquest does.
Problem is one Shivan Sathanis class Dreadnought would take up a whole map so Im curious to see how thats done, probably same way GC did the Super Star Destroyer.

Woot! FS2 was my first online game (i was playing on a 56K modem with a ping of >1s ... ) I've also downloaded and played through the B5 campaign, but that was 2-3 years ago. With this Galactica mod, i might have to dust off my FS2 CDs (or do i not need them now?). One thing that always amazed me about the FS2 was the fucking huge size of the big ships. And of course the localized damage system, allowing you to take out parts of the ship individually
You need the original game unless the mod was written to use the open source code which I dont think the Galactica mod is.
The latest version of B5 for FS2 was just released. Its now version 3.2.2 IIRC.
I was heartbroken when Freespace 3 was cancelled.

and dont forget to watch the season premire of BSG this friday!
Reading the info on The Babylon Project 3.2 is a stand alone game that uses the new Open Source code.
The instructions on the website tells you NOT to install into the Freespace 2 folder since TBP 3.2 uses the latest Open source Code.
Im D/L now so I will check it out. Supposed to be updated graphics, effects, and 32 bit color and new high detail models and high rez textures.

The Star Wars and Galatica mods look very good. Freespace 2 was a very good game, about time someone uses it's potential :)
