This is difficult to do. I've tried to ignore it, tell myself there's an explanation, but the time has come to admit it - the Search function's usefulness is very limited these days. I knew it when they cut off availability of anything over a year old. And limited search resultes to 500. There are even days when it seems incapable of any result other than "Sorry". It's just not the big tool it used to be ( even if I am ;)).

It hurts to admit it - it's like shutting the door to your own child. Particularly since I have been a leading proponent of the "Use the search function!" response to repetitive or lazy requests. How many times have I posted some variation of that, whether nicely, or, uh, not so nicely?

With the Search function exhiniting such limitations, how can I continue to upbraid those who ask the questions which have been asked before - even if they were asked just 15 minutes earlier in the same thread? I suppose I can't. *sob*

I'll be in a period of reflection and mourning. Please don't bother sending any meals up - I'm just not hungry. I'm too shattered.

Well, the good news is that all archived posts have been restored.

The search results have always been limited to the last 500. You can always get around that by using the filters, however. For example, search for posts older than a year, and then newer than a year.

You are correct, though, about it now returning all possible results. The best you can hope for is to remember the exact poster. :uhm:

Perhaps a master sticky with a frequently discussed topics is in order?

I tried to use it, but it just got mad and started to threaten me with the ban hammer-which it had apparently stolen from an admin who had tried to "fix" it...

Hmmm. I'm ordinarily a pretty good searcher, having in the past routinely conjured up posts from the mists of the FH forum's creation. I have been good at using the filters we have, although I wish we had a true Boolean system.

But something has changed in the last several months. Using older/newer and combinations of all other filters I have looked for posts (which I know were made) by rare keyword as well as poster name, and routinely get a "Sorry". I've used specific FH forum, FH in general, or even "all open forums", and still often can't get the results I'm after. It's gotten to where a search is more often than not in vain.

Either I have had a massive stroke (always a possibility ;)) and suddenly can't construct a coherent search, or something is funky with the search function.
