I want to know what shot down the transport plane "Kalevala". This was after the winter war and before the continuation war. The plane was coming from Tallin to Helsinki. It was shot down by a Soviet bomber apparently.

I find this hard to believe, any help would be apriciated.

Was the precious cargo in the plane or something? What's its signifigance? Or were you just wondering if 2 soviet bombers did in fact shoot it down? :lookaround:

http://forum.axishistory.com/search.php i typed "Kaleva" and quite a few results came up, but i didn't look to see what they said. there is lots of finnish speakers and historians at that site if you have a broader interest in finland circa WWII.

It was a Finnish Ju-52 that was attacked by 2 Soviet SB-2 light bombers. Since the transport aircraft would have more than likely been unarmed and Ju-52's are not known for their speed it would have been a sitting duck.

Apparently the aircraft was carrying a French, German, and US Diplomat.

Yes...it was a very clear provocation between the Continuation War and Winter war.
