An Irish technology firm has issued a challenge to the world's scientific community. It says its invention smashes one of the basic laws of physics by producing free energy. The company, called Steorn, has placed an advertisement in the Economist seeking 12 top scientists to examine its invention, based on magnetic fields, and publish their results. It says the energy eliminates the need to recharge mobile phones or refuel cars. Sean McCarthy, Steorn's chief executive officer, said the company had issued the challenge for 12 physicists to rigorously test the technology so it could be developed.

'What we have developed is a way to construct magnetic fields so that when you travel round the magnetic fields, starting and stopping at the same position, you have gained energy,' Mr McCarthy said. 'The energy isn't being converted from any other source such as the energy within the magnet. It's literally created. Once the technology operates it provides a constant stream of clean energy,' he told RTE radio. Mr McCarthy said Steorn had not set out to develop the technology, but 'it actually fell out of another project we were working on'. One of the basic principles of physics is that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only change form. From: http://www.rte.ie/business/2006/0818/steorn.html

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wow !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The next thing we shall see would be ragdolling people, surviving a drop off a cliff while scraping it, and laying down in mid air.....Oh great, too late. Man, its a funny thing, you do learn something new everyday, but not in school all the time lol. I never knew that either this thing really does create energy, or the magnetic field just converts the tiniest inefficient amount into a reliable (i hope), clean energy source.

heres an idea primo, bring the phone and the charger with you, and 1000 miles of extension cord. I bet the 12 scientists would just put their noses up sky-high.

Yea no more power bills, no more oil for cars, no more heating bills. everything could run itself all the time for free.

Smells kinda like cold fusion to me, to be honest.

Cold-fusion is nucu...neuc...nuclear power, and doesnt use magnetics.

There was a guy once who constructed something awesome it was 2 weights attached to a long thin copper wire and sent into orbit around the earth. The wire would glow as it crossed the poles becuse it was producing energy like an electro-magnet. Well it was one, only using the earth's magnetic field. Magnets and copper and motion produce it, Only instead of a coil, it was the orbit that produced motion. Whatever, just read this as we wait for Fuzzy's cold fusion post response...

In order to understand the operation of an electrodynamic tether system, the Earth can be thought of as a giant magnet, a principle used for direction-finding with a magnetic compass. If a copper wire is placed in orbit around the Earth, it will move through the Earth's magnetic field and a voltage will be induced in the wire. The wire will function like the armature in an electrical generator or motor, and the Earth itself will act as the magnetic pole-piece and frame against which the resulting forces on the "armature" wire react. If an electric current is allowed to flow through the tether wire by grounding it to space at both ends, the wire conductor will experience a mechanical force. This force can be either thrust or drag, depending on the direction of the current flow.
