Tropical Weather and Storms - Hurricane Updates from weather.com Here it comes... Gustav is projected to be on the level for Katrina, and making landfall around Monday Morning. Category 4 at the moment, and there's nothing that can stop it from going to Cat 5. There's a video blog somewhere on that site (got to it by checking the Tropical Storm Hanna tracker) which talks about evacuation routines. Obviously it has already begun and is much more organized, but one thing that I don't agree with is chaining up the Super Dome for any refugees. If were the mayor, I'd just prepare it for use as a shelter. The Natl. Guard is already down there, plus you can use Red Cross, or volunteer groups to make sure it doesn't degrade to the pitiful conditions during Katrina. Anyways, let's hope that New Orleans and the rest of the Gulf Coast can catch a miracle and not be damaged too badly. And someone should have called up FEMA last week based on their "stellar" performance three years ago. Wake up, government...

Hey, it is not the governments fault when Katrina made so much damage! If the government says: "Big storm coming, you might want to leave the area it hits!" and you decide to stay, to get fucked over by mother nature. Then it is your own god damn fault! Whatever FEMA can get their finger out of their asses and save you, does not matter. If you stand in the way of a hurricane, your going to get fucked up.

You do have a point Jensen, but there's only one highway out of the NO area, and the major airports are probably jam-packed. And yes, they do have warning and evacs have already started. The govt. has started on the right foot with the Natl. Guard, but I'll wait to see their efforts after it hits. I think they've learned their lesson, but that's not totally confirmed yet. And as Ionizer said, some people just can't get out, so they'll need shelter (Super Dome would probably be the best, but that's a no-go). All we can do is to cross our fingers and hope things turn out alright.

The government of New Orleans had all the means to evacuate people before Katrina who did not have the means to, hundreds of school buses in fact were not used and left packed into parking lots, ready to go but untended. In all seriousness, the katrina fiasco was caused at the city and state levels, when they embezelled funds for the levees, which meant they were of very poor quality, and when they refused to federalize the disaster in the first days, which mean that the only thing the US government could legally do to otherwise get federal relief in there was to declare the state was in revolt....

All in all, I'm looking forward to seeing if the state has figured out yet how to handle this kinda thing....

at200807.gif Gustav did calm a bit when it went over Cuba, at least it won't be category 5 at200807_windprob34.gif But New Orleans is still at the most probable spot for Gustav to land :uhm:

This one will be more destructive to the city,

1.) its already destroyed 2.) Gustav will hit land at a category 4, where as Katrina hit land-fall as a category 3. 3.) Levies are not fully functional.

Honestly, at this point, the repair work needed to rebuild the city is too much, what they should do is tear down the city, and build it around the out rims of the valley, it really makes no sense to build a city below sea level, I think New Orleans needs to move.

Considering NO still elected the same darned mayor, I'm not hopeful.

The first unpredictable event of the election year is about to happen.
