"In-flight rearming

The US Air Force's research lab in New York is developing a system will allow fighter planes to be rearmed, as well as refuelled, in mid-flight. A supply plane, such as a C-141 or C-17 would incorporate a telescopic boom that extends from its rear. This boom would boast its own miniature wings, to give it stability and lift while deployed. And mounted on top would be a looped conveyor belt to move bombs and missiles from the supply plane to the boom's end. A fighter plane could then fly over the boom until optical sensors confirm that the weapons below are aligned and can be snatched up. The Air Force's patent application reveals political motivations for the plan. It says that some nations are reluctant to provide access to bases for refuelling and rearming. "The nations of Europe, for example, lying closer as they do to areas of turmoil such as the Middle East, are often reluctant to take hard stances against terrorists who lie within an automobile ride from their borders," it reads."

:-))))

This belongs in the off topic forum, Fuzzy. It has nothing to do with FH, really. >.>;

I cant wait to hear about these missiles accidentaly falling to the earth to detonate. either that or exploding while in the air. We need a mothership dammit and flying cars too. When will they realize this...

Flying cars are already here, but before they can be used normally, the glitches have to be worked out, i dont need to tell you what the effect is of losing power, as long as we dont have antigrav tech.

Pilots are already running long long 8-16 hour missions. let 'em go to sleep! Being on station for longer is just going to wear them out.

Next they'll come up with some clever system for exhcanging pilots in mid-air. Then planes won't have to land for days!

Self-driving cars are coming, too.

We've already got "auto-pilot" trucks that can drive in coloumns, with only the lead vehicle being controlled by a human. Vehicle b follows vehicle a, vehicle c follows vehicle b, and so on. When the vehicle in front brakes, the computer makes your vehicle brake. You can sit there in vehicle f and work on your laptop while your trailer drives by itself. The best part is that it's actually considered safer than human control as the computer reacts in milliseconds, whereas a human typically requires a second to take in events before taking action (by for example hitting the brakes).

And, of course, we've got GPS programs that let the car tell the driver where to turn and which roads to follow. And let's not forget the UAV technology. There are converted passenger planes out there that have taken off, cruised, and landed all by themselves. Without people on board.

Scientists imagine a relatively near future where it's considered absurd to have humans drive cars or fly planes, since computers have taken over and do it with a much higher degree of safety.
