Friday the 6th will be the 64th anniversary of D-Day or Operation Overlord the well known invasion of Normandy. Now I see people wonder why I didn't started this thread on June 6th. One simple reason; because now I'm first. Just kidding, the airborne invasion of Normandy started in the late evening of June 5th, thats why. 3090195.jpg?v=1&c=ViewImages&k=2&d=552D90A84D8CF98077027547E6E95278A55A1E4F32AD3138 So may we all remember the poor bastards who died that day and ofcourse the many hard days following. Remember the British, American, Canadian, German and not to forget the French civilians who died. Overlord means alot to me, I personally think it was the breakthrough to victory in Western Europe. My grandfather still talks about 'The War' everytime I see him and I know he wants to go to Normandy once and I think I'm taking him there as soon as I got a drivers license and a car. To much personal information so let's continue with some info about D-Day. The beaches, Sword Beach, Omaha Beach, Juno Beach, Utah Beach. The main objective of Overlord was to liberate large areas of France, capture German hardpoints (Caen, Cherbourgh, etc.) and to reach the river Seine in 90 days. They made it, even earlier, but with high casualties. Just to remember the victims I also want to quote this text by Eisenhower we all know.

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

And remember, freedom has a price and it sure has been paid in Normandy, 1944. Thank you.

Also the French troops (177 commandos on Sword Beach under Captain Kieffer, and French SAS paradropped into Brittany to coordinate the resistance on June 5th), as well as French Forces of the Interior who died in supporting operations.

And of course, the many other nations who partook in supporting operations on the sea and in the air, like Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands...

Although it was more about remembering victims I would like to add your info, Johannes. But edit time expired. Somehow I knew someone was going to bash on the nations.

Nice to see someone showing a little respect for the German KIA as well, most people don't care too much about them.
