It seems like there are a lot of potential areas for failure. If NASA has trouble with a single parachute deploying on an unmanned spacecraft like the Genesis capsule, I'd be worried about every stage of the abort executing perfectly in an emergency setting.

However, I guess it's a lot better than a thirty year old shuttle falling apart at its seams.

Well as big as our agency's dick is, they still admit that the space shuttle was pretty much fail... never used for what it was originally intended.

I know. I remember watching those launches in the 80's with a great deal of wonder about what the next evolution would be in our shuttle program. My old man was big geek about that kind of stuff back then and used to record every launch live. Even took us down to Florida to watch a launch once. Shame about what Nasa has become. :(

This is 50 year old technology and it will still probably take today's NASA 20 years and 30 billion dollars to "develop" it.

Well they lost against the military budget, that is for sure. :) Either way, finally they are thinking of implementing a safety system for that new 'devolution' called Ares.
