This is something I often think about, and just can't grasp. Who and why decided to label 'cuss' words as some horrible means of speaking? I'm going to swear just for an example (Please, do not use this thread wrongly).
Ok, we know what the word "shit" means, yes? Am I wrong, or does that word mean the same thing as crap. So why is crap not considered profanity? They mean the same thing. I'd like to know who, one day, sat down and decided to make a list of rude profane words that mean the same thing as none-profane words, but are for some reason considered rude. Is there any real logical history on this? I'd imagine some people would say that Jesus had something to do with this in the biblical times. But I don't agree. I don't think Jesus would make a list of words like this. Heres why, if he did, that would cause temptation to other Christians. Since temptation is a Christians, and anyones worst enemy he wouldn't add to the vast amount of temptations if he didn't have to. I'm not taking any sides with this. I'm just saying, this could be a theory.
'Swearing' is a form of expressing frustration in my opinion. Well, it used to be. I don't have anything against it. Unless its just used rediculously much and in stupid forms etc. But if you really think about this, it does make you wonder who, what, where, when and why. Not to point anyone out, but I was sorta hoping Jumjum had some logical thoughts on this topic.
Once again, PLEASE do not use this thread as an excuse to swear. Its just a discussion thread. :)
I believe that some words have just installed themselves in modern culture as horrible words. And it goes without saying that a lot of modern swear words had very different meanings in the past, and somehow now, in our new English language we have perverted those meanings to something entirely different, either worse, or better.
I also believe that the meanings of some words are changing in the English language, and that over the course of many years, words, adjectives especially will change meaning, and become more and more as an accepted means of conversation. Perhaps such words as Bitch, or Shit, will not be the horrible words me and you know them as today, but instead words with different meanings.
This is especially true even today, some people believe the word Faggot is an offensive word, however in some languages it means Cigarette, Bitch is another, in French meaning "Female Canine".
I just believe such words have been converted over the years, and as we continue to exist, such words will change again.

I don't really give a shit, besides that under certain circumstances it might be prefered to use one word over the other (Like it probably wouldn't sound very inteligent or nice if you said "Protect your cunt and use a condom". ;)
It's all about context and goals.
Don't dare to use the word faggot here, or call bitch to a lady user, or we loose friendship...and you postcount
out of curiosity: which word is word is worse: shit or fuck?
However, I don't really believe in swear words at all. I believe all words have a purpose and a time to be used. "Swear words" are really words that can add a great deal of infliction to a statement. They can also retract from the statement in cases where they become less mature. Language always depends on how you use it.

BAAAAAAAAAAH!HAHAHAHA!!!!!!! The F word is an acronym used in the old Puritanical days, you know those dark ages for spaniards and other barbarous types. It stands for "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge". Unlawful meaning unmarried. Beacause that was considered a bad thing, the word became a bad thing. Like retarded or idiot, and now handicapped and Oriental (I think this is an American thing, changing oriental to asian, which is even farther off the mark, ask Russians or Middle Easterners if they are Asians. and BTW, Oriental simply means Eastern where people orient themselves by the rising sun) Because the people that bring forth the fact that this word is a bad thing (furthering the stereotype that they are trying to wipe out), the word becomes taboo.
Yeah, political correctness. Let´s call all black guys "maximum pigmenten citizens" and all gypsies "mobile ethnic minority".

Speaking of taboos. A year so ago a well know company for various bakery/candy products rebranded one of it's items.
The so called "Negerzoen" (Lit: N¡ggerkiss or a more fitting translation for English users: Blackkiss/darkkiss. Any french speaking person probably understands better). It was deemed racially offensive towards people of dark skin... various organisation of said racial groups laughed and told they had no problem with the name since it was just a name that has been around for a long time and has no racst or discriminating meaning...
A negerzoen (sweet Cream/mouse in chocole filling):
Not sure what they are called, I refuse to call them any differently then negerzoenen.
Luckily other items such as the Jodenkoek (Jewcookie) hasn't seen a namechange (yet?):
Or what about "blankevla" (White/blanco custard)?
The N word and C word have no place in being used against people. I'll say Cunt like motherfucking cunt when playing pro evo with friends. But never in my life would I call a girl a cunt. But fucking words like fuck, I don't care, although there is a place and time. You shouldn't have to use them in class to get a point across, because that doesn't show you off as very smart. Jummy here can make long essays about a topic without the infliction of swear words and his essays will be 100x more powerful then somebody who used fuck a couple of times. There is a time and place for everything.
