So who's tried the new RO mod?
Downloaded the other day and went wild with it, I did. This mod has made some really good steps forward.
Graphics are great, of course. UT2k4 engine is working well and running fast. The sounds are improved, mostly. The DP still sounds like a toy. Animations are completely redone and are very smooth and realistic. When you bring up Ironsights, it dosen't just zoom out when you are done, it lowers the gun. It can be difficult to lower or extend ironsights when doing other things though, so don't expect to be able to quickly drop your gun after reloading.
The gameplay got some nice improvements too. The SMGs are no longer screen-shaking crazy weapons. They are a lot more comfortable to use now. No new weapons in this version, unless you count tanks, which I havent had a chance to get into yet.
RO still suffers from a couple problems though. There are movement bugs and glitches of all sorts. Sometimes keystrokes will not be detected, which can be frustrating. Also, the game still heavily caters to lone wolf snipers with infantry rifles. You can sit hidden away in some rubble the entire game and kill 20 people. Its very frustrating to constantly get killed from very long range well behind the front line.
All in all, a great improvement and well worth a try if you are a realism buff or love the Russian front.
I tried this mod a few days ago, and i havent played fh since (in a whole week :uhoh: ) Anyway I love how the feel of realism, no health bar, friendly indicater, map with friendly location, no crosshare etc... It really feels like your in a bombed out ww2 city. And the weapon animations are just amazing :eek: . And i have a nice little screenshot for you guys :D
Sweet. How do the tanks work? I cant seem to find any servers running the map.
I actually prefer infantry combat over tanks. On the map i was playing, there were only two classes, tank commander and crew. You had to have two people in the tank i believe. There are three positions: driver, cannon, and mg. It is actually really hard to coordinate a tank effectively unless both people are talking to each other.
Ya I tried the mod yesterday. it was not what I expected it to be.
I saw many screenshots, and they all looked magnificent. But it just appears to be great. It's mostly the texturing that does the job. If you look closely, almost every building is very simply modeled. However, the impression the environment makes is excellent. They are tall and big, with lots of windows and entrances.
The realistic gameplay is a very nice touch. The MG deploy, the animations, the physics, and the one shot kills. But it all doesn't really make it up. RO really feels arcade to me. Especially the movement animations of soldiers. Especially the tanks are disappointing. It's too arcade and simple. I have to say I'd prefer FH's vehicles (not because of the numbers).
The maps are really.. odd. The control points have a crap radius. I like how it has the BF:V "a-like" capturing properties though. But there are at most two respawn points for reinforcements. Really attracts basecamping if ya ask me. RO gets really quickly boring, maybe it's because it's almost always infantry, and I'm used to the "luxury" of BF. It also appears that every map has the same ambience sound over and over.
The sniping thing is also true. Problem is, no one can force you to attack, and both teams will just sit and wait until someone peeks around the corner. Fortunately, RO has class limitations. This is excellent. Magnificent. You can customize your weapon layout, and apply for classes. It's just a shame that the game can't be played with more than 32 players. It really destroys the gameplay, because you often miss out on action, if any.
The scenery is very nice, the atmosphere and lighting, weather effects make an awesome bunch of maps. Too bad they did not include the new tanks here and there in maps, so far I only saw two types of tanks in the Kursk map.
All with all, I'd stick with FH. Nothing brings such a great variety of gameplay, which is different each and every time, than BF. I've played the classic "Battle of Orel" about a thousand times now, and it never gets boring. But when in RO the same level gets loaded I think "oh no, not again.." now if only FH could combine the realism of infantry combat with the current mod status, FH would be perfect. That's why I think FH for BF2 will definetely be worth my money. I just can't wait!
I also play this mod and I must say it's pretty damn good. I like the realism in in, the iron sights are awesome, the weapon models and textures really nice, the maps really give you a feeling that you're there, in some abandoned bombed city fighting and the sounds are also good. The only thing that bothers me is the bugged animations (hey its UT).
I really like how one well placed LMG can repel an enemy attack. The MG34 in this mod is really amazing if you use it properly. The snipers are also well done, I especially like the scope effect. :D And I don't agree that there is too much camping in it - it hasn't happened to me yet, not counting the maps where a team has to DEFEND an objective.
But I agree with KingRudolf - if BF2 is all that DICE promises I can't wait! (for the FH port that is.) :naughty:
I've been playing it a fair bit, and I really like it as well. The "Realism" feel to it is fantastic, and I love pretty much everything they've done with it.
Only a few things bother me. Bugs, lots of em. Crappy movement animations. Automatically being forced back into IronSites mode after firing (ARRRGH HATE IT!) Some maps just suck
The tank combat is interesting, and has a nice 'realism' touch to it, but it doesn't hold ANYTHING to FH. It's not supposed to tho. I hear that they ONLY put in tanks because vehicles were a requirement to enter the "Make Something Unreal" contest. The infantry combat tho, is absolutely superior.
How's the artillery system?
Quite good actually. An Officer or NCO will spot a location with his binocs. A red X will show up on the minimap showing this location. Another person can then call for the arty strike using a radio (static object, usually in the rear lines). The arty will then rain down and blow shit up.
is this an objective mod like DOD or is it like battlefield?
