Von Mudra;4289328 As for you, Phoenizz, so Korean war, Vietnam, and Iraq war vets don't deserve any respect? Way to go....

We here in Finland don't have such veterans from those conflicts so I just wrote wwII cause it touches here the most so I didn't mean it disrespecful way. Though I rank WWII vets higher than any other is because it was just different that you americans don't really know about: literally fighting for your own country. I mean if you lose, your actual home and family will fall on enemy hands, not just that you retreat and being shipped overseas back home.

I look up to the countries where the people actually look up and respect the people that are in service, here in the Netherlands you can't even travel in uniform without people throwing all sorts of verbal dirt at you.

I've had plenty of insults thrown at me, from old classics such as; ''If you'd kept learning you would have gotten a real job'' to insults such as; ''What's your hyves-profile so I can look you up when you return in a body bag from Afghanistan.''

The Dutch have never been to fond of their army, in their eyes the entire Defense branch is just a money drain and there are plenty of people that would like to see the entire Defense branch being disbanded and the money being distrubuted to welfare, schooling and other countries to protect us.

We have a similar situation here in Belgium, at least with the ever decreasing funds, although the general feeling towards military personnel is not that negative. The last 15 years or so, the Belgian army hasn't gone on a "real" combat mission anymore, mainly peacekeeping, protecting Kabul air port for instance. Our heavy materiel was getting gravely outdated, but now our tanks and tracked vehicles are being replaced by wheeled vehicles that are not suitable for doing what the tracked vehicles did (especially the replacement for our leopard 1 tanks ,the piranha IIIC, armed with only a 90 mm gun...) Some other new vehicles are very fit for their job though. The Belgian army wants to go wheeled, because these vehicles are more easily deployed abroad, so i hope that, together with the new defense minister, will result in some more "active" missions for Belgian troops.

Sounds like the USA. Many here would say the exact same things.

I respect the military and those that serve in it because there is no other job description that requires you to put your life on the line more completely than being a grunt.

So respectability comes from how completely you put your life on the line for something?

And don't come on with Kumbayjah because in reality, there are bad folks in this earth and someone has to deal with them, someone with testicles.

The armed forces are a necessity, but as a tool of the State the army isn't necessarily destined to stop the bad guys. We didn't stop Saddam 20 years ago, for example.

Will the person who neg-repped and insulted me for this (quoted above) come out and tell me just what is wrong with what I said? It's pretty bad form when all you can leave is a red mark and a nasty comment, when I'm not being disrespectful at all.

@ The Fat Controller - It wasn't me cause I'd tell you to your virtual face if you are wrong... There are different degrees of respect and I reserve my highest for soldiers and mothers. Both put themselves in Death's Door (whether intentional or not) and once that is realized, I'm certain you have a human being whose life is changed. The military has a role in this earth to play. With others performing their roles as well evil can be conquered or at the very least neutralized. It is the military's job to kill people and break things which forces bad men to leave their comfort zones and hide like the dirty, mangy, scurvy dogs that they are, impairing their ability to be an abomination on the earth.
