In contrast to Mr. Cruise, I submit John Depp. I stumbled across the last few minutes of an A&E Biography on him which made me consider that I've come to respect his abilities. Many years ago I viewed him as a sort of Brat Packer, nothing more than a teenage heartthrob, a poser who brooded and hid out as career moves rather than a reflection of artistic temperment. Cry Baby, Gilbert Grape and Edward Scissorhands didn't do it for me. (I think now that had more to do with John Waters, the idea of a grotesquely obese woman and Tim Burton, than with Depp.)

But in the last several years, without realizing it, I began to look for his movies. He has good range (Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, The Ninth Gate, Pirates of The Caribbean) and obviously works hard at choosing his roles rather than box office possibilites. (There was the famous uncompleted The Man Who Killed Don Quixote by Terry Gilliam in which Depp played Sancho Panza, not the old knight.) Although the Pirates franchise no doubt has made him mega rich, he still seems to look for good roles, even if they are not the leads. I just saw him in Once Upon A time In Mexico (Salma Hayek!) and it was a treat watching him ham it as a delicously corrupt and twisted CIA agent.

I'm going to have to make a study of Depp's movies and watch them in a new way. Off to Netflix.

Thoughts?

Johnny Depp is definatly one of my favorite actors. In my opinion his best roles are William Blake (Dead Man), Captain Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean and of course Raoul Duke (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas). I have never seen sombody play the role of sombody filling himself up with all kinds of drugs such convincing than Johnny Depp and I think he would have deserved a Oscar for that.

Twenty-One Jump Street!

Now can we go back to talking about large-breasted women, or if you bring up a Johnny Depp film, Keira Knightley in a corset?

The thing with an Oscar, it is difficult to decide if the movie is great or just popular. Johnny Depp is facing that quite a bit. The people who judges him are not sure if he is a great actor or he just happens to be a very popular one.

You have to draw the line between "hot, popular actor" and "actor with great performance". When you get someone like Johnny Depp, it is difficult to tell the difference.

Yeah, watch Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. His interpretation of Raoul Duke is amazing... (Specially on the Ether scene, hohoho :d)

Erm, you somehow seem to be implying that greatness as an actor (i.e. skill, quality, that certain "something") and popularity are mutually exclusive. Newsflash: they're not. Need 27 pages of examples, line by line?

Agreed. BTW Once upon a Time in Mexico was on last night. I didnt know Depp was in that. But I have to agree about him from the begining. I didnt want anything to do with him cause all of the girls were all about him. I became a fan after fear and loathing. Since then its all good. However, I cant miss a good chance at high-jacking yet again by asking the following. To you guys I submit, Helena Bonham Carter. A complete and total Johnny Depp wannabe. Im speaking of acting styles. Dont get me going about my Tim Burton as being over-rated. I havent watched one of his movies that I liked. Scratch that. Beetlejuice was the shizz, but watch with glee, The planet of the Apes and you will witness the blatant Depp attempt, over-acting at its best. Which brings us to my real question... Would you? 69214710_ph2.jpg Dude I so WOULD!!!!!
