We all know and love the Type XXII, the coolest-looking sub of WWII (except for the I-400, and the Italian Maiale, but then who's counting.)

I stumbled on a pretty cool article about the Wilhelm Bauer, a Type XXII boat that was commissioned in February 1945, scuttled at war's end, and raised over 10 years (!) later for refurbishing and service in the Bundesmarine. It was commissioned in 1960 and served until 1970.

After retiring from the German federal navy, the Wilhelm Bauer was rebuilt as much as possible to mirror its original WWII condition. The boat is currently docked in Bremerhaven, and this is a pretty cool photo essay:

As the link says, the type is XXI.

And yes, it was a really cool boat :) I think they also scuttled one in Sweden...or was it the Swedes who raised it.
