BBC NEWS | Americas | Women at war face sexual violence

According to several studies of the US military funded by the Department of Veteran Affairs, 30% of military women are raped while serving, 71% are sexually assaulted, and 90% are sexually harassed.

Let's not derail this discussion to a "Lobo hates America", because that's bullshit. I bet this happens in lot of armies of other countries, and maybe with even worse stadistics. And for sure there are soldiers with irreprochable conduct who deserve our respect.

This is a thread about the dangerous lack of moral values of people with a gun in their hands, if they can harm their own brothers in arms, that die side by side with them, what can they do against "the enemy" (civilians included)

Not too long ago I saw and listen to a very touching clip with a lady who was a war vet and talked about her experiences in the army.

If someone has no problem with killing another person there is a good chance that he also doesn't have a problem with other violent behaviour. Maybe something women might want to consider before joining a club of men who don't get to interact with females that often.

Maybe it is good though that some women join the military anyway. In the long run it'll remove chauvinism from those archaic organizations and maybe add a bit of reason and humanity to fighting.

^Where do you get the idea that women are all about reason and humanity?

Soldiers, when properly trained are not supposed to be lacking in morality. Quite the opposite, it is essential that they be instilled with a very strict code of morality and behaviour. This is invariably drilled into them long before they learn to kill the enemy. This is a necessary precondition, because soldiers kill to protect their comrades or if they are ordered to, so they must first learn to respect and obey. Sexually assaulting a female soldier SHOULD be as unthinkable as sticking your bayonet into the soldier in front of you. The fact that it happens, and happens as much as it does, shows a gaping hole in their training and attitudes. One, or both of the following must be missing. 1) Female soldiers are not being seen as comrades. (I don't know much about the culture of the US military, but this seems less likely to me.) 2) Soldiers are not being taught that sexual assault is harmful to female soldiers. The second seems like a no-brainer, but in fact I think it is the most likely reason. The pernicious notion that a woman encourages sexual assault, (or even worse, enjoys it), is probably allowed to persist. This is not entirely the military's fault. It is a curious fact of human nature that it is a lot easier to teach a man to charge a machine gun than it is to teach him to change his attitudes towards woman.

A couple things should be understood. IN the USA, sexual harassment can be making a dirty joke with a woman in the room, talking about sex with a woman in the room, saying she's hot, etc.... Sexual assault can be saying that she's hot, playing a practical joke (like, if she's passed out drunk, and doing something like drawing on her with a marker), etc....

Thanks for your clarification... but... what was the point with it? Are they liars?

How do you explain that roughly a third of the women in service are raped?

Someone's dick slipped?
