My recent rediscovery of BattleGroup42, which issued a big re-modeling of its BF1942 version just about 6 weeks ago, while continuing its work on its BF2 version, moved me to re-load my first love, "Experience World War 2".
XWW2's last version of BF1942 was August 2005, and it has remained untouched since then while they work on their BF2 version. Judging from their updates, XWW2 for BF2 is a long way from a release. And although BattleGroup got a healthy head start on FH, it looks like it will be a little while before it will release, but it will beat XWW2.
XWW2 is a treat for me because it has such different maps. They're huuuuuuuuuge, with great terrain which has such a realistic feel. For example their El Alamein, which is completely different from the vanilla, gives a feeling of vast distances. They also have very different maps, such as Milne Bay, Cherkassy Pocket map, a Kohima/Admin Box map, a Stalingrad map that concentrates on the area from the river bank uphill to the edge of the industrial area, a China Theater map, Padenborn, Walcherin Causeway, etc. Seems like there are more British and Canadian maps than I'm used to.
Even though their effects are over two years old they still have the most amazing flames and oily smoke - you've got to see it to appreciate it. A rifleman is allowed to use a bayonet in several maps, which is activated by right mouse click. There is no magnification for weapons, and right click merely gives the option of iron sights, while the default is crosshairs. It's not as tank crazy as BG42 and there are some maps where there is no armor at all - for example, the Villers Bocage map is an all infantry map. Surprise! And somehow the AI on bots is much better than vanilla, FH or BG42.
There are not as many weapons, vehicles or planes as in FH, and as I mentioned, their skins are not quite as sharp and detailed. Tank guns have a curious "whoomp" feel instead of a bang, and since targeted armor doesn't blow up immediately on destruction it's sometimes hard to know when you've hit a tank enough - like RL I guess. Explosions seem a little "soft", and you see them more than hear them. Tank guns have very little anti-personnel splash. Kits are few and far between, unless there are a lot of hidden ones and I just doesn't know where they are. Small arms seem to have a slower cycle, whether auto, semi or bolt.
If you have a couple of extra Gigs and a computer fast enough to play FH 0.7 without a problem, XWW2 will be no problem either. It's fun.
Tank maps on XWW2 are so sexy, day of zitadelle, Oh man, gorgeous.
The latest BattleGroup42 version is 1.35 right mate? If so then i think it might be time for me to dust off my BF42 CD.

XWW2 was the first mod I used when I started playing BF42 about 4-5 years ago:P Still my fave. The lower quality skins allow for less lag with lots of vehicles, thus, on Zitidelle, one can have every single person on the map in a full 64 man server in a tank. This creates truely massive, pitched tank battles, of the type that you can only dream of in FH2. ITs very team orinted, and tank battles occur mostly at pixel distances, much more realistic then the currnt 10 yards in FH2. I remember the 130th even did a test once, and got 60 T-34 tanks to spawn on that map before any serious lag problems. Armor penetration is more realistic due to the lack of any balencing on the maps, if the T-34 shell's can't penetrate the back or side of a Tiger, then they don't. No damage at ALL. Shermans are all taken out in one shot to the front by any german tank from Pz4F2 on up. All infy rifles and MGs are one shot kills, and smgs and pistols are 2. Man, I love that game:naughty:

As I said before BG42 had its faults but they did have the P-39 Airacobra. I used to load that and hunt for Stuka's and Bf109's to my hearts content. The tank battles were very fun too.
Bonus points to anyone who knows XWW2's orginal name! Actual queston, how populated are the servers?

And its same as usual. One server. If you get one person in it, get ingame. If you get 2 people in it, time to rock and roll. If you get 4 or more, your in heaven.
Sadly, XWW2 alienates people from the game due to how it is, ultrarealism. With the lack of any sort of map balancing of tanks or such (something I whole heartedly support, make it realistic, not balanced!), many people do not wish to play the game. Only a few people left, maybe 30, if that, ever play this game. [/SIZE]
Servers have like nobody, yet everytime 130th joins with like 2 of us, the servers get 10+ people because a lot of people like it, but nobody has the guts to join a server.

This thread sparked me to redownload it, give me a holler when you're playing it next. Because I began my forumage with the XWW2-42 guys only to hear about FH later, and I NEVER played the game online!

How would we know what it's like, he was only making a slight prediction as to what teamplay will be like in FH2. Because that is what he meant. I'm sure if you let us play, those with seniority on the forum :), we would give it positive reviews and see if it really lives up to its' expectations. As of now, we can only guess, and, possibly, if not given a chance, taint your reputation. :devil: JK, sort of.
