Hello, Implementing the British variant of the american m10 (Achilles) would be fun, because it has an open top which exposed the crew from anything above them. No when playing FH sometimes i get so close to tanks i can jump on them, but normally only armed with a rifle i cant do much, apart from lie on them hoping another tank would see my name and destroy the tank along with me (unfair tk but i always ftk). However implementing the "Achilles" would make tank-jacking even to the humble rifle man very easy... and would be quite amusing. Not much would need to be changed code wise... because its basically the M10 with the 17 pounder on it with an exposed canopy. What do you think?
uhm...didnt the M10 also have an open top? As far as I know, its only dice who choosed to have the top closed. Or?
Dont know, i just assumed it was some crazy british thing, not use to the warm weather in france....n all that
Anyway if the m10 is meant to be an open canopy then surly it should be reflected in the game.
To be honest, I dont know. We will have to wait until Anlushac gets here, as hes the expert on all parts of Allied armor! :p according to WW2Vehicles:
M10: A M4A2 medium hull had a semi-open turret added.
Thats all I know. what the hell does a semi-open turret means? EDIT: But the 17 pounder sounds like a hell of a much fun! :naughty: The regular M10 only had a 76mm gun...
Yeah the M10 had an open top as with all American tank-destroyers . The American philosophy of a tank destroyer was that it should be fast and have superior visibility (therefore the open top) than the tanks it was facing. Although alot of American tank crews didn't like the exposure against infantry and built there own self made covers on their tanks. As for an achilles - I'd love it.

yes, as said above, M10s were open top and it was one of the 1st "WTF?" i had while playing vanilla BF long time ago (when it came out). Now for the Achilles, it would be an excellent tank destroyer with its very good 17 pdr. It has been used till the end of war iirc and would be (like so many other tanks such as the allied M8 howitzer; the soviet T-60/70 light tanks or vehicles such as the DUKW or the smaller sdkfz 251 (?), the soviet Ba armored cars etc etc...) a welcome addition to the mod.
Not exactly a hard vehicle to make, a kitbash would suffice, just put the Fireflies 17pdr onto the M10 and Voila you have an Achilles.
Actually you need the counter balance on the end of the gun barrel and the 17lbr's muzzle brake. Basically take the barrel off the Firefly and add counterweight and attach to the M10 and you have a Achilles.
According to present research the name Achilles was never used. It was called M10C, or M10 17lbr.
The name Wolverine attributed to british M10's is now also thought to be incorrect. the 76mm are actually called M10's.
Its a semi open roof because the front part of the turret is covered. M36 is the same way, thats to help keep weather off the gunners position.
US stored its 76mm ammo in fiberboard tubes, Brits stored 17lbr ammo without tubes.
But I like the name Achilles.
*yawn* its been kitbashed
Nice info, however slightly off the point, my point was that it should show the open-top, and as you have all pointed out, the M10 had an open top as well... so why cant that be reflected in the game.
I think it would be nice to sniper (with out the use of a scope) the chaps inside, then tank-jack it.... just like a well placed shot tacked out a driver from the jeeps, leaving you with a fully functioning vehicle! Thanks
