I've been working on small 512 infantry maps and hopefully release them eventually. Maybe if people were to make them and we made a pack, the devs would post it on their main page, because a lot of people don't follow forums. If it was on the front people may be more inclined to download them. Just a thought :P Or a tab on the mainpage for community downloads etc

Niebler, this is the same way used to distribute mappacks for FH1, and simply put it didn't work very well back then. It might work better with FH2 due to the way smaller number of active servers (i.e., if you want to play you can't just switch to another almost-full server -because there isn't any ;)- instead of downloading the mappack), but I wouldn't count on that.

Now that I think about it, is there any way to place a download link in the in-game news like it was done for Highway Tampa (IIRC)? I suppose that if possible this could only be done through patches, though... so we're back to "mappacks need strong dev team's support".

Flippy Warbear;4662587What I've gathered, theres no time anymore. ;)

OMG leak! :)

But really, at the risk of flogging a dead horse, those maps are finished, already tested by the tournament community and begging to be distributed. They just need packaging up, and maybe slap a 'Community map' stamp on the loading screen to differentiate them from the official dev team maps.

If they were available then the player base and the server admins could decide which ones to run in the rotation, as happened with 0.7. Personally, I would much rather have the chance to play a variety of new maps which are maybe slightly flawed or unbalanced than only be able to play the same handful of 'perfect' maps again and again and again (or rather, end up tired of seeing the same old thing all the time and not play them, which is the case now).

But they have to have the backing of an official patch release, or half the people won't download them (as happened with the WaW pack, even though it was advertised on the main web page and the forums). And if half the people don't download them, then the servers have a problem: either you run the map pack and risk the new and casual players getting kicked whenever a new map comes up (which can make them abandon the game altogether), or you don't run it and risk the veteran players getting bored and not playing so often.

I was elated when I heard a mappack was comming out. On the day it arrived I installed it and when I looked in the server list to my horror there was 3 people playing it and everyone else was playing Aberdeen. I thought it will get going in a few days but it never did. I told countless players about the pack but most were not aware and the majority will just not bother. Like Moleman says the maps are done and just going to waste. The guys who made them must be feeling a bit sh*t about it and thinking their efforts are wasted. Soon enough they wont bother at all. Ok so the Devs want historical maps/battles. Lets take Mareth for instance, the map and units may be historical but the in-game battle is anything but that. The spawn and flag system just doesn`t allow for this. I cant see what harm having non historical maps would have as long as the timeline, the action and the gameplay is there. I`m admin on a RedOrchestra server, any new map that comes along will be tested by us. If the players like it we keep it in the rotation, if its not so popular its kept out of the cycle. I can however run these maps somedays if there`s a demand for it. All that eqauls up to a thriving, happy, busy and growing game community. I know that maps can be downloaded in RO from the server unlike BF, so this is an even bigger reason to include maps in the install. Look inside the BF2 server list, the game has been out for 3 years and they are all still playing the same original maps from release. Talk about "LabRats" ! There`s 15 thousand players on BF2 some nights ( the Devs captive audience) if BF is like that what chance has FH2 got. FH2 has had thousands of players trying the mod and I`ve seen countless saying how awesome it is, so, why is there ever only one full server? Ok, some people are sick of the desert some may say,( me personally think its the best theatre) only because its the same 13 bits of desert they keep seeing. From what I`ve seen of the maps in the WaW pack they are anything far from desert and offer at least some more playgrounds to showcase the mod. We are going to see some new maps soon I know, but after these have been played to some extent it will be the same scenario as it is now. If mappacks are made they will not get the played simply because a fair majority of the casual players will not d/l them. If these was maps were available from the onset most of these casual gamers would have become a lot more active in FH2. I`ve been off work all week and have wanted to play FH2 for most of it but after 2 days I just couldn`t force myself to play the same maps anymore, so thats just 1 number down from the servers, I wonder how many more players are feeling like me?. I know a few myself that I was playing with regulary and I just don`t see them anymore Lately Anyway thats my thoughts, if the Devs want the mod to just simmer away then let it be. Waiting for a new theatre to boost numbers is a little short sighted in my book. The mod has been running 10 months now with little activity. I don`t know how many maps are comming withe new release but I guess it wont be many at all, and banking on the mappers and mappacks too boost numbers is most definately not going to happen. So something positive needs to be done, even if its not allways exactly what the Devs want, some kind of changes or rethink would be good idea for the mod in general. Its either that or just let it smoulder away until all interest is lost, that will happen one day regardless, but as for the day it happens it`s up to the Devs. Cheers all.

I think we managed to get 12 people playing Nile Delta at the absolute peak. Awesome map, it's a crying shame that it'll probably never get played again. Same here: they were fun the first few dozen times but as much as I love the game I've played those maps to death, so I've stopped playing altogether. On the plus side we've got 3 fantastic looking maps coming with the patch so I'll be back to play those without a doubt. Hopefully HSLAN will be running with just the new maps for a while.

You`re lucky, the most I got was a 4v4, and that didnt`t last long before they all got bored. It is shame and a complete waste of the map makers time and efforts. A sad pity all round really.

I have just got home after being away for few days and was quite looking forward to booting FH2 and playing for a few hours. That was until I looked in the server list and saw 21 players online. Normally the server would be just about full at this time of the day. but this is the worst I`ve seen it now.:(

Cheers all.

I remember getting a 'decent' ammount of people on the WaW map pack on our public when we ran it, like the most I saw was maybe 15-20ish? Not bad D:

Yeah i think that was around the most we got as well. Which at least i thought wasn't totally bad. I was afraid nobody would ever play it at all, so i'm at least a bit happy some played it. But of course when the biggest server out there didn't run it i guess it's hard to get the main bunch of people to go ahead and download it.

I think it would require a cooperation between all major servers and FH team to get a mappack to actually be very popular.

Yes agreed. Now, I'd imagine if both communities, WaW and FHT, submitted their top three rated maps we could get those released in an "official" FH2 fan mappack.

It would be excellent if the two communities voted on and submitted their top maps to the mod - after all, the WaW and FHT players have already tested them and know which ones play best. But really, I'd put money on a mappack not working, even with official backing, simply because a lot of players won't download it.

We saw it with the last mappack for 0.7. Fantastic maps, but the servers soon ditched it because a huge chunk of the player population got disconnected everytime a new map came up - no matter how many times you tell people to download the damn mappack, most of them won't. Sure, you can have clan servers running the mappack and maybe getting 20 players on, but a 64 player map with 20 people gets pretty dull.

Maybe I'm missing something but I can't see any disadvantage to including those maps with the patch and letting the servers decide whether or not to run them. New hats and tripods are all well and good, but without a variety of new battlefields regular players are getting bored and leaving, and only having 3 new maps in the patch won't do much to solve the problem. And the frustrating thing is that plenty of great maps are already done and waiting to be played.
