Demanding that level of perfectionism seems totally counter-productive. I've seen the vid for Thermopyles and its beautiful - a truly magnificent piece of work that would be a real asset to FH2. I would love to play it, and so would many other people, I'm sure - FHT, WaW and public players alike. You're saying that for the devs to deem it 'good enough' for their mod you would have to spend ANOTHER 150-200 hours working on something already so excellent? It's great to have high standards, but for a free mod with a limited lifespan that's just madness.

It seems strange to keep maps in closed beta in such a tiny (and rapidly shrinking) community when we need new maps so desperately. In RO the maps get on to the public servers whilst still in beta, and get tested for real out in the wild. Of course RO has Steam which makes things easier, but if FH tournament maps were released with the patch - marked with 'community map' or 'beta' on the loading screen - they could be tested by the playing community and improved upon in the next patch if necessary. I mean, the FH2 beta-testers managed to miss the appalling bofors spam on Tobruk, the inescapable shell-hole on Bardia etc. in the original release, which had to be fixed in the patch. And there are still floating rocks on Sidi. It's not like these maps are entirely perfect, even after all those hundreds of hours.

I'd rather have variety and freshness with a few rough edges than stagnation any day.

M00SE;4679193 Nothing has happened for several months. I call that stagnation. How has it grown stronger at all ? I don`t see any evidence myself.

why are you saying that...? Look at the Fh site archive... + there are tons of stuff that isnt shown yet... Normandy etc... I dont know what you mean... 2.15 is out soon and after that Normandy.. many amazing things are happening, you havent seen the beginning of FH2 yet. trust me

Natty, I can empathize with your great frustration with the editor as I have also spent over 200+ hours dedicated to producing a high quality map. The map I created,Tilly sur Suelles, was for the WaW tournament. Now, I've never mapped before, but due to boredom between campaigns and not enjoying my pubbing experiences I began that project.I found inspiration and renewed hope in anticipation of Normandy despite not having the proper European statics, weapons, vehicles.

A reasonable solution to some of the uneasiness within the community would be to allow tournament map teams like FHT and WaW special access to a section with new statics, textures, vegetation in order to speed the process of producing high quality maps for the community. Mappacks have proven to be unsuccessful, therefore, we as aspiring mappers need the backing and encouragement of the FH2 dev team. New mappers will step forward and help contribute to mod and community. A big step in that direction would be to include the best "Community" maps with the release client.

I didn`t build a killer rig to look at screen shots of some games up and comming content, I built it to play on :) I understand fully that there is new stuff arriving and I`m looking forward to it as much as anybody. Sadly though my interest has been lost in the game as of late and I`ve not been thinking much about it at all. The bear facts are they could include every unit known to man into the mod, but this issue still remains. Having a limited number of maps will serousily hamper this or any other games desireabilty no matter how many bells or whistles its got on it! Ok so 2.15 and Normandy is comming up, so eventually we will have approx 25 maps, its not going to take many months before people are at the point they are now. They have allready played 13 of these maps to death for the last 10 months with out anything to add variety wise. Is another 13 or so maps run over and over again going to give FH2 the large player numbers that I see in other BF2 mod`s servers ? Like everything in life... things grow old and need replacing with new blood to keep a healthy balance. Hopes are riding on the community to make maps and extra content when Normandy arrives. It is hoped in turn that this will boost the numbers and the mod will really get going. How`s this going to happen with the situation as it ? All this hoped for content will get wasted as only a small percentage of players will take time to seek it out .

M00SE;4679193As for saying the mod is growing stronger second by second is a little bit of a dream in reality. Nothing has happened for several months. I call that stagnation. How has it grown stronger at all ? I don`t see any evidence myself.
These things take time. Just be happy you are getting updates just about every week rather than a smaller mod like BF Pirates who disappear for half a year without a word.

Natty Wallo;4678887-Terrain must be handmade, basically this means that every grid in Terrainmode must be touched by you, at least around the flagzones. I can easily spot terrain that is just left untouched, or roughly mapped. Ditches, Hillsides, Road edges, Cliffs, all need to be carefully tweaked using Size1 Strenth1 brush - this takes time. Not only for look, but for gameplay function. You need to know every little grid in important areas, can infantry pass there? can tank pass there? etc...
I agree with this except for the terrain section. My policy is that you can have a program-generated heightmap and still have a good map as long as you made touch up the terrain where needed in the editor.
I would be a good thing if the custom FH2 mappers should form a guild together, and then defend their common cause to the FH devs, so maybe a few custom ones could become officials.

I agree. Look at FHT. And WaW, at WaW we've created our own little mod group apart from the community dedicated to solely creating high-quality FH2 custom maps for WaW that I'm sure will be released to the public later on.

Hi Guderian, and yes this idea would be awesome but would require some strick laws and heavy supervision from the FH2 team.

I couldn`t give a fluff about Pirates ;). Ok, we are getting the updates every week , to me its more frustrating than anything else as each we week we have to wait and wait and wait ( and be told wonderfull things are comming our way) for 3 new maps to arrive. The game is going to need a steady supply of new maps as the months progress in order for it survive and flourish. Under the present situation this is not going to happen, and if there ends up being 25 maps available the mod will stagnate. Nobody is going to play the same maps over and over again. They will simply get bored and do other things. Just like what has happened now. The servers would be busier as we speak if there was a greater number of maps available . I know for a fact I would be into playing all weekend if there was only a slim chance that I would have to play Bardia etc etc only once over the duration of it. Cheers

Mind you, the three new maps will be different. At least 2 of them are urban infantry environments of which currently there is only hyacinth and bardia. The difference though is that they have neither tanks nor are a raid map. So although people will get used to them quickly, they will probably be more popular in the same way that inf only karkand and jalalabad are in vanilla; only without so much sniper fire and nade spam.

However, I do think that the best couple of campaign maps could be included in the patch as 'map name [WAW/FH Map]'.

Show some respect for Battlefield Pirates. They did more then you will ever do.
