It is impossible with the BF1942 and BF2 engine due to the size limitation as far as I understand.
It wouldn't be much fun to play a whole theatre with just 64 players either since it would be very difficult to find eachother unless you decide a place to fight over. And then are you better off with the shoebox maps we have now. It would be the same as now when we choose a map, and then fight over it.
What I want to see is that the outcome of one map have an impact on the next map. Like the old Close Combat series had. It should be rewarded if you do a tactical retreat, and if you play stubbornly a map will you be in a really bad situation when you play the next map.
But it is possible to do this. CRS have made an awesome work with their World War II Online: Battleground Europe. The gameworld in WWII Online is in scale 1:2 of the real world and the modelled world is some 30.000 square kilometer (continously) and it contains some 500 villages, towns and cities, all historical places (but not modelled exactly as they looked like). The bigger cities like Antwerp, Liege, Brussels et al is bigger then most FH maps.
Sure, the graphics isn't as nice looking as in FH, but instead do you get a visual distance of 4000 meter at ground, and 8000 meter in the air and when you sail. The sound engine allows you to hear players heavy artillery and engines at several kilometers distance. You also hear small arms firing up to 500 meters distance. Running troops is heard at some 30 meters distance.
And there is no limitation on who many players that can join the gameserver (there is only one server). If your comp is good enough can you set it for 128 player and 128 sounds. But it demands quit alot from the computer. :P
If these features (both visual distance and sound) was added to the BF1942 engine would it lag to death. CRS has decided to prioritized the gameplay before the graphics.
The guys making D-day 1944 operation overloard seem to have overcome that graphical limitation. I would post their adress but their changing servers so their site is down right now.
Either way, they boast massive scaled continuos maps and amazing graphics. It's not a MMO like WWII online, but it plans to have support for 128 player co-op modes. If the WWII online was able to use this engine, they might be the greatest WWII game... ever.
yea thatd be cool especially if it was totally fake, like russia is 1/15 the map and germany is like 3/5s the map, and america was like, new york. and the russians and germans attacked america simultainiously, and the shermans harness the power of the german and russian tanks, and grow in size, creating megazord, which then obliterates the ideals of both nazism and communism with a ray of capitolist sunshine.
how big is BF2? i heard it was double the size of BF42 8x8? then 16x16 for water?
but what is 1944 d-day? its a mod for both hl2 and bf2? oh and for UT too? 250,000 guys at the same? WHAT?
can you explain it more?

I did a quick search for "theatre" and it came up blank, so I thought it safe to post this. Have anyone else than me thought about the possibility of having a whole theatre, or at least a whole nation, be a Forgotten Hope 2 map (I bet no one have:rolleyes:)? For example all of Western Europe (France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Western Germany), the Eastern Front (Russia, the Baltic States, Poland, and East Germany), or the Pacific theatre from west to east (with a Japanese carrier starting near Pearl Harbour, about to launch the famed air strike). Seeing Desert Combat made an (unofficial, I think) interesting map of all of Iraq, including neighbouring nations, I think it's very possible to do this. You'd have to simplify cities and such, of course, but I think it'd still be great fun. For example, for a European campaign centered on the invasion of France, control points could be West Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Ardennes, and Paris. The Maginot Wall could be an impassable area with static defenses, just for eye-candy's sake. Your thoughts?
But was going to be an endless map...
patillabut what is 1944 d-day? its a mod for both hl2 and bf2? oh and for UT too? 250,000 guys at the same? WHAT?

They're releasing a full retail game(the big one) with the "Reality Engine". they are also making serveral free mods for some other games(not nearly the same size and scope as the retail on). not sure why.
FH devs should do a Pearl Harbor map in 2 parts:The attack of the ships at the sea and the attack of the bases on the island.
there should be a hypothetical invasion of san fransisco. thatd be bitchin.
