Not sure if I've seen it suggested but..
Typically with tank formations along with the Tank commander there were forward Artillery observers present... So how about making a secondary fire option availible for the topside mounted gunners position that can spot for artillery...
The StuG III curently has this ability, Sherman 105mm should have it too.
It would be really nice. This is how I see it being implemented...
Use the "hatch up/down" code to allow a tank commander to "button up" and "un button". That is to say, allow him to get inside the tank, and also let him pop out of the coupoula and fire the AA machine gun. While inside the tank, he can spot for artillery.
If this is to be done, then the view must change. Make it look like little portholes, not like you are sitting on top of the bloody tank.
The StuG can use Artillery Calls yes... But this is not what I am talking about.. I'm talking about using the topside MG position and giving it a secondary option of calling for artillery.. in particular giving this option to what would be "command" tanks such as the Tiger's... Leave the Driver's options alone as they are.. Just add the ability to spot/call for Artillery to the Topside MG. Another secondary option I'd like to see.. which the inner MG position could have would be the use of the anti-infantry grenade launchers on the Tiger's and other tanks... This could be a secondary fire option given to that position. This may also help encourage the use of Tank crews... Prolly just give the anti-infantry grenades a low overall ammo supply so it isn't abused..
wrenches encourage the use of tanker classes. period
make command tanks
Why?
well if they did computer contolled arty (a la eods-sr-71 or bf1918) they could have it so it could call in arty strikes from the commander position. Also, depending on what series of tank they would still have there main armarment.
Another idea would be to make a command tank a mobile spawn, for either other tanks or people. Then tanks would have a better chane of getting some infnatry near them if they stuck with and protected a command tank.

You just copied those ideas from BG42... how about coming up with something original?
bg42 has "some" good ideas
