Right now bayonet charges are rather suicidal, most of the time the defender can simply walk backwards and shoot you, while you have to run to reach him (soldiers apparently walk forwards and backwards at the same speed), and you can't hit him while you're running. Some suggestions:
- Code the bayonet so it will keep stabbing as long as you keep LMB pressed (in other words, make it an "automatic" weapon instead of a "single shot" weapon), so you don't have to frantically click while charging.
- I'm not sure about if it's possible in BF2, but allow the bayonet to stab while running. Hitting things while running is the whole point of charging anyway ;)
- Give the bayonet a slightly longer reach?
- Give the bayonet a (very) small crosshair. Right now, the invisible bullet is not hitting where the rifle/bayonet is (try hitting a flag pole to check this out).
I have to agree with you on this one.. I've been shot more often in the face during a bayonet charge, than I've got a kill with it. Really annoying when it happpens in situations where I KNOW I would have gutted the guy if I hadn't pressed the mouse button too soon, or too late.. -_-
I atleast like the idea of making it an automatic weapon.. and to be able to use it during sprinting if possible... but we'll see how that works out :)
I like the idea with charge while running. The "automatic" bayonet... well I already see an abuse for it (ex: running into a bunker and only touching your foes to wipe'em out) but it's not bad either.
Go bayo powaH!
well, make bayonets do a bit less damage instead, so you have to do a bit more than just touch them to kill them?
just a bit though.. I'm not saying making it as usefull as a plastic knife.. but you might need to stab the bastard for a second, befor he dies?
I don't think it would be a problem because there will still be a "reload" time between every bayonet stab even if it's coded like an automatic weapon. The "bullet" won't be always on, just like a MG doesn't fire an always-on death ray even if it's full-auto (it just fires very often with a short pause between each bullet). And the devs can adjust the reload time to whatever proves to work best.
Automatic bayonet, meh, doesn't bother me either way.
But I do agree that if it is possible to code, it would be nice to be able to stab while running. Right now, its impossible to have a real bayonet charge because you have to stop running and to go the kinda fast walking just so you can stab, but then that gives just enough time for the other guy to kill you....

This is very important to me. I think its funny how the devs think that you can somewhat aim from the hip with the rifle in real life (which is why they put crosshairs on them) yet they dont think that someone can accuratly thrust their rifle into an object/person. LOLz I support crosshairs all the way all around the board. Some people think they get rid of realism. I disagree.
Well its just like PR will never include a finger on the end of an M16, US soldiers often put their hands on the end of there rifles, point with their index finger, and shoot, but you'll never see that in a video game. And you'll never see the exact way someone holds a gun in real life, In real life...your not holding a gun far down below you. Your holding it almost exclusively with the rifle butt to your shoulder, if you are carrying it from the hip, you have it verticaly across you pointing either left or right, not straight, Sure could you fire from the hip...yea but your gunna have one hell of a pain in your side afterwards, not you mention its almost impossible to aim from the hip.

Rambo did it.

This is unrealistic because? With the invention of repeater rifles and later, automatic weapons, the bayonet charge did indeed become suicidal.
