there's a parallel thread on capital ships/Rheinubung. I was trying to think of a fun, variegated way to deal with capital ships that wouldn't be either too fast or too boring. So, I started brainfarting a little bit, maybe hoping to inspire someone who wants to set up a naval or amphibious map somewhere along the line. So here's a very rough idea for a good map with BIG SHIPS: could take place in Norway, Normandy, Mediterranean, Pacific, wherever, who cares--I'm sure something suitable could be found. The ingredients:
-Attacking force with big ships, destroyers, cruisers, whatever, plus scout planes that can target artillery -Defenders with fixed coastal guns and powerful binoculars, also scout planes, MTBs (motor torpedo boats), coast defense ships, etc. and a submarine -A reasonably protected spawn setup for the defenders (i.e. the boats spawn in a fjord or bay or whatever) plus a sub that spawns outside the shallows -A big set of shallows between the attacking and defending forces; only the light units (i.e. coast defense ship, MTBs, attacking destroyers) can traverse the shallows
The idea would be that you'd have a big artillery duel between the coastal guns and battleships, and maybe MTBs, subs, destroyers and coast defense ships doing some close-in fighting.
To make it more interesting, you could have an objective-based scenario:
-Attackers have to blow up coastal batteries (like the AA batteries in BoB) -As soon as the batteries are gone, attacking force gets tank & infantry landing ships -Attackers have to batter their way inshore to a final objective flag (maybe a series of 2-3 push flags to prevent capping by a bailer.)
I like it. it would be cool if the naval bit is long to satisfy the navy guys. The idea of getting landing craft after the objective would satisfy my landlubber side. Hey? Who got chocolate in my peanut butter?!?!?
Keeping fighters & bombers out of the equation, eh? I like it. I'd like to think if you got on shore and capped one flag you would win after all the trouble to get there but you're probably right. How about having the first flag out in the water in direct line with a couple of coastal guns? I hope our other ideas in previous threads about the conveys reaching an objective are soon forgotten either...
Yeah... you definitly have to pay for your flag caps. id like to see many many ships. With several coastal guns trained. Like that huge one in Norway someone posted last week.

I was just trying to think of ways to slow down the flag capping a bit--if you have an objective, I don't like the idea of it being a very binary equation (once you cap it, bam, it's over.) This would force attackers to do a gradual sort of assault.
Anyway, this wasn't a concrete proposal for a map, just maybe some mental stimulation for any mappers looking for ideas/inputs. I think this sort of thing (big ships hammering away at each other / coastal positions, but without ramming or arcade-y gameplay) would nicely fill a gap that we currently have in FH.
If I recall, the FH 0.6 fan mappack had a map exactly like that. It was operation Dunkirk or Invasion of Norway or something I cant remember.
Personally, I would like to see a small ship (dds/ptboats/subs/etc) only map. Good fast paced action and less lag from the occasional ship ram.
Good idea, although you have to be careful that the defenders don't obliterate the entire attacking team in one volley.
Fuzzy, this is a great idea. An amphibious assault/invasion map would be awesome if it could be pulled off correctly.
I'm pretty good when it comes to making up concepts for maps, just never learned how to make 'em. If you'd like I could come up with set-ups and visions on how a map like this could work and be made.
Most lot of us are good with concepts, but can't make maps/can't be arsed to learn :-)
I love it:smokin:
