an AVI file. When I open task manager in Windows XP then run the mouse pointer over the file my "explorer.exe" under the processes tab shows my cpu usage at 99% and I have to reboot to be able to get control back. When I try to delete the file it says that the file is in use by another program.

hmmm.....it may be a virus. u just put the mouse pointer over it, and it locks up? get norton antivirus, or a free one like AVG, and run it.

This thread makes VERY little sense. Uh, mofo, I REALLY hope you didn't just say that Explorer is a virus. Now, if he doesn't return in 48 hours with a coherent post, this thread will be locked.....

that has happened to me, you cannot delete it because something is using it, although in fact NOTHING is actually using it. this happened to me with a .PNG that i created. even in safe mode you cannot delete it. no mofo, i highly doubt it is a virus.

and what is using 99% of your CPU, it should be something like "System Idle Process". i got sick of it and was in need of a reformat, so i did, thats how i got rid of it

Try going to Start/Run/Type "msconfig" without the "/Then click the start-up tab ontop. Take a look at what you are running on bootup, something there maybe able to stop the process that is running the .avi file. Usually viruses don't come in .avi files but i think spybots could be hidden somewhere that would run it. Also try going to google and search for spybotsearchand destroy. That is a free program that will delete your spybot problems.

Uh, mofo, if you lost 99 percent of your CPU power, how would YOU feel?
