Hey I was browsing the net as usual when I read about 2 types of Sherman tanks that seemed to be used on the D-day beach landings. There were some that looked like a boat and others that had like 2 big pipes on their back. I really don't know what were those pipes for (could somebody tell me?) but it seems like these tanks they were used on dday. Just suggesting on maybe adding them if new D-day maps are made. See attachments for images of the tanks. One of them is from a CoD mod (German Front) which I've decided to attach due to lack of images found on the internet.

I'm pretty sure they were used for getting air to the engine . Its been suggested before. I like the idea of mabye like 1 or 2 at the most , b/c not many made it ashore.

First question is why put them in at all, they a very small part of the whole invasion. An from what I have seen on the History channel they didn't perform all that well. There was not even a significant number of them that even made it to the beach, so the D-Day Sherman really didn't effect the out come of the battle. The Allies where still able to land and build a beach head to operate from.

On what map would they be needed? On omaha they couldn't be used, on gold there are already tanks on the beach, plus the LCT.

Thats just a deep wading kit. The trunks were to keep water out of radiator and air intake for engine. They were used on many Shermans coming ashore that had to go through the surf and IIRC were not used by the DD Shermans. I have seen pics of Shermans in the Pacific using those as well.

The only beach that had lots of problems with their DD Shermans sinking was Omaha beach.

The other beach's got most of theirs ashore just fine.

I was just saying future D-Day maps. Other beaches, maybe Juno or other different/new fields of battle like one of the french villages that are close to the shore etc.

In the book from Steven Ambrose i read that most DD's sank to the bottom of the channel. Never the less, one or two of them in a map where you have to attack the Germans in the normandian hinterlands would be interesting.
