I was curious about the explosion from the beta video of FH2 - When the PAK fired at the tank. It looked, well... it kinda looked blobby. I figure that the FH crew did some work on the original BF2 explosion? Personally though I feel the BF2 explosion is fine (At least that which occurs when you have an artillery strike). And it's perfect for dust flying. If perhaps a new design (white dust, debris) was used for the event that a shell hit a building, then we could get the kind of damage that vanilla BF42 enjoyed in the same instance. Now to make it clear, the explosion kind in question is the one that occurs when the commander calls in a barrage. You get the fire and explosion for a split second folliwed by high rising dust and a bit of dirt. So if a shell (tank, arty, ship) or rocket (zook, arty, ship) hits the earth, you get a smaller version of the BF2 arty trike explosion dependent on what hit i.e. tank explosion is smallest, then arty, then ship (Ship explosion could be as big as that from BF2). The same goes for rockets. Smallest being zook, then arty, then ship. Now for the shell hitting stone scenario, it could occur when a shell or rocket hit a hardend surface like a paved ground or building. You get an explosion like the one from BF2 except smaller for each and whitish/ grayish (or a color depending upon the the surface kind since not many buidlings in NA arer whitish). This scenario, you get the explosion for a spit second, then the dust along with flying, sometimes spinning chunks of brick (recall this from vanilla BF42?) I feel that would be more dramatic and believable cuz frankly in as much as I like the FH1 explosion for some things, it did get annoying when it occured on the middle of a paved road - And the one in the video seems a wee bit chunky. A small addition to it could be a layer of that magic the FH devs added to theirs in FH1...The dust that suddenly appears and faces the direction from which the shot came in - It gave the illusion of force which would help the imagery of a shell smacking iunto the earth - So were that added, why FH2 could boast of one of, if not the best explosion ingame
what video? I havent visited the forums in a while, and I havent seen the video you speak of, so if you could give me a link, that would be awesome.. thanks
I think that the majority of explosions should be bigger and less fury so to speak. :) For example this video. Clicky.
Was playing Operation Norwind COOP earlier today (Now that's a nice map) and the explosions were continuous and tres cool courtesy of bigass tanks, nebelwerfers and Howitzers. One thing that really makes it come to like is the combination of the snow fluffs that fly up with each explosion - courtesy of FH crew. And the fact that the ground is perfect white like the Battle of the Bulge map so it feels real to have a combination of dust and snow... In Fh2, if the devs play their cards right, you could have this done with the slightly improved vanilla BF2 explosion and good mapping (as was the case in Op. Norwind), you could have a really exciting gameplay - And I haven't mentinoed any toher aspect

Dont you think it would be a much better idea to have realistic explosions rather then just "slighty improving vanilla BF2 explosions"? I mean it would add to the overall realism feeling of Fh2. Thats always a good thing, me thinks. :)
Well, considering the engine's limitations and thier ability (moreso in BF2142 than 2 but still) to create an illusion of details in simple objects with very little polygons, I think the game's effects are relatively ok - At least for the priming coat... Besdeis, BF2 already demands quite a bit from some people's PCs, we cant do too much of what FH did to BF42 (upping the spec req.s a notch), a notch up for this and some of us wont be able to play it...
For explosions, aside from its visual treats, i have another suggestion for its sounds.
After watching many many violences in some silly Holywood movies, no one would think like Spielberg when creating an explosion scene. Well, if you stand far far away from the explosion site, you should see the fire and the smoke building up first, and then a couple of seconds later, the BOOM!!! So, there should be some delays in the KA-BOOM noise... my first impression is: cool, because a few days ago, i saw a live ammo explosion from distances away, and yes: the fire and smoke first, then a moments later it shook the earth and the area surrounding it. Hey, if you want to experience it, come to an army exercise demonstration nearby.
It is quite cool if FH can make it into the game, call it Doppler effect or such, it will be a very nice feature for both eye-earcandy stuffs.
So, a shell fired at ultra sonic speed hits the ground, burns and THEN blows up - Got ya chief... And why the heck was everyone afraid of the Armored tank, you could simply run before the explosion.... joke. True. It would help if the explosions from burned out vehicles was delayed - A tank no matter how damaged (ampart from in rare instances) should silence for a bit burning quietly, everyone in it dead.... Or not, and then Kablammy! Explosion from shells and rockets should also have pieces of debris fly in the air and land. even if it was the earth that got hit, there should be chunks of dirt... same effect as the buidlng, but brownish...
I may be retarded, but I think he meant if an explosion occurs at distance, the boom would come later... speed o light > speed o sound... ?
Fun fact for those who don't know count when you see an eplosion/ lightning and the amount of seconds = km away(or is it miles?)
I'm so going to get flamed for this and people who don't know it will join the band wagon of "like omg we know what do you think that we're retarded! You're retarded!" but yeah there it is...
