Not really... bfv allowed for the engine to create a hole in the heightmap, however you needed to place an object there (tunnel, bunker etc).. BF2 does not allow this as far as I know, and bf1942 doesnt either. BFV didnt allow the player to dig this hole, there was a HandWeapon called shovel that when you fired it, it produced a model of a pile of dirt and a shovel, and that in turn had soldierspawnpoints connected to it.. This is why your idea of having a handweapon that produces foxholes wont work in bf1942, the foxhole could be placed in weird places and be buggy.. for example; the shovel in BFV needed MobilePhysics, so the pile of dirt didnt end up in the air or sticking out from edges, but this also caused it to slide down slopes, looking ugly, it also needed hitpoints so other players could destroy it, but this also made it so if you placed it in slopes, it took damage from sliding down.. I guess this would also happen if a foxhole was made like this... in any way it would cause too many problems, both for the mappers idea, and for other players, if there was a FoxHoleShovel weapon in FH...
I really don't want to interrupt your discussion and maybe this is a little bit off-topic, but will it be possible to deploy heavy machine guns like in FH? It would be awesome if you would be able to deploy them on static objects like boxes or out of windows etc.

Ok that answered my question. I figured this was theoretically possible, but I had a suspicion that it was not really doable. The problem with sliding down hills and the potential for exploits by placing it in odd places seems insurmountable to me. However I had an earlier suggestion (months ago) about foxholes already existing in the map. It seems to me that, if your are standing in a foxhole and shooting out, your weapon should be more stable. As it is when crouching or even prone. This is because your arms are able to rest on the ground, and you are also able to stabilize your body by leaning against the front of the foxhole.
best positions i think, would be to crouch or to prone. Prone would be the better otion but would look wierd. You simple lie flat, crawl to the edge until you can just see over and fire whoever comes by. If you consider making foxholes a vehicle-object, you would be adding arcade gameplay to an otherwise reality driven-game cuz it would mean you can blow up a foxhole and it would go off killing all witihn it instantly (FAKE!) and spewing metal shards into the air. if you want to dig ingae, you would make FH2 even more arcadey than BF42 cuz a soldeir doesn't turn tail and from pursuing enemies, toss something and spawn a hole in seconds. Plus it might be too complex to code to even consider the potential good of it. I would say we do good with the holes we have, perhaps vehicle points in a fox hole which give the player animation of curling and then ofcourse machine gun positions and the like. You could even use these vehicle points in mountain areas. I've seen so many re-dos of WW2 battles were soldeirs lay on their back on a slope to pick of enemies coming up from one end - A good imporvised concealment which aids firing...These could be vehicles too. All the player would see is a spot on the map signifying a vehicle. Getting in woud get him in that position to fire at enemies coming that way. same idea goes for foxholes, same for tree sniper positions... Don't put a ladder there, just make the tree a vehicle and have a nice model of the player lying up in it. That way, you can also destroy the tree as you can signboards in BF2 etc
A very over looked excellent fox hole is the one in Zitadelle above the hill. It's a giant dug out with boards placed over it and two bazooka kits there, perfect for tank hunters to just sit underneath and hit the bottom side of the tanks. I wish they had more of those 8)
I don't know about Fox holes. But I would love to see alot more defensive cover and Positions. Just make sure they are the right height. When you stand you can shoot out...when you crouch you're head is just below the top :)
Well PRR showed that it is possible to place statics, so I would be possible to place a foxhole, tho it will be a raised mound of dirt with a hole in it, itll still work for protection. :)
