What's so wrong with abstraction for the sake of playability? I see no reason why the two ammunition types couldn't be combined into one as it is now (every round is both HE and AT). For all I care it could be the same for the 88s.

The 88 when in firing mode uses "A" and "D" to switch between teh types of ammo.

In a vehicles that is steer left and steer right. You cant use the numbers to switch a different weapon because in vehicles that is coded to change vehicle positions.

And the 88 gets two ammo types because it is a dual purpose gun. It is originally a high velocity anti aircraft gun that was improvised quite successfully into the anti tank role.

You can't make a simulator with BF1942 engine, so don't even bother. And you can abstract certain things for the sake of playability even if you aim for realism. One man tanks and ammunition management are that kind of things.
