I'm trying to get i76 to run under win98 SE w/ directx 7, i have a tnt 2 ultra, and whenever i install it it prompts me to install directx 3 (gag) and shortly after i refuse to let it install dx3 it crashes with an isdel error, this is one of my all time favorite games can i get any tips??
If you go through the install process it shouldn't overwrite any files since the files are newer. If they do just reinstall DX 7 afterwards

I recently installed Descent II on my box and it installed Dx2 over Dx7 wether I liked it or not. I thought I was ok it wouldn't overwrite files would it? Yep it did. So I reinstalled Dx7 no prob. If you really have to have I76, I'd say, install it and Dx3, then reinstall Dx7.
Nope, I fearfully followed your advice and installed dx3 over win98 SE, and guess what?!? whenever i try to install i76 i get the same exact error, in the same exact spot during installation >( any other idea?
woah check out this reply from activision!
The version of Interstate '76 you have was released before the Pentium 2 and 3 processor, and is incompatible with it. If you send me your CD's, both discs, I will send you some that should work on your system. To replace the game we need to do the following:
1. The CD(s) 2. A note reminding us of the problem or a copy of this email 3. Your return address
Send this to:
Activision Customer Support 3100 Ocean Park Blvd. Santa Monica, CA 90405
When we receive your original CDs for the game, we will send you a replacement. Please let me know if you need further assistance.
not only that but the whole email conversation to get to this point took only about 1/2 hour.... so if you're trying to install on a p2, or p3, or apparently a celeron (p2 core), then send in your CD's!!!
