This would make a nice addition to the large tank maps of the eastern front. the kv-85 was the basis of the is-2, their hulls were very similar to each other. the kv-85, as you probably have guessed by now, used an 85mm cannon, the same gun of the T-34/85. It should appear in high numbers in maps like prokhorkova where is2s are rare and the t34-85 is often inadequatly armored to defeat the panther ausfG or Tiger.

Hang on - wasn't it the other way round: the IS series was based on the KV series, right? But you're right, I guess - this one would make a nice addition. You're right on the fact as well that the T34-85 is underarmored compared to both Panther and Tiger. But the KV series isn't that much more heavily armored than the T34 series. According to wwiivehicles.com, the KV85's armor rates at 60 to 75 mm on the hull - basically vertical armor, that is! The T34 has some 45 mm of armor - but heavily sloped. I guess the T34's hull is about as well protected as the KV series' one.

The KV series turret definitely is a totally different story with 110 to 120 mm of armor, no doubt there. But I wouldn't say that makes that much of a difference - the Panther's 7,5 cm PzGr39 penetrates some 110 mm of armor@30° at 1000 meters! The Tiger penetrates at least 100 mm of armor@30° at 1000 meters as well. So basically, neither the T34 nor the KV series will survive a single hit by either German tank...

Fact is, however, that a T34-85 can kill a Panther with three to four hits - which is not too difficult IMO. I did that once on Prokhorovka myself. The Panther lasted some ten seconds after I spotted him. Too bad there was a Tiger behind him...

EDIT: Fixed some typos again.

yeah.. the KV-85 was the stop gap between the KV series and the IS.. But, Im sure the dev will get to it at some point. Its only a turret, Though, I could model it. but whether they would want it or accept it is another matter. heh.

When USMA2010 said that the KV-85 was the basis of the IS-2 he meant that same thing-that the IS-2 was based on the KV-85. One thing I noticed is that the turret is different in the first pic. By the way here is a blueprint comparison on both Kv-85 and Is-2 so you get a better idea on their similarities and differences: KV-85 kv85.jpg IS-2 is-2.jpg If you want to see it with more detail go here: KV-85 -> http://www.battlefield.ru/outlines/kv85_16.gif IS-2 -> http://armor.kiev.ua/Tanks/WWII/IS2/is2_1.gif As you can see the difference is more noticed in he hull rather than in the turret. They have pratically the same turrets and Kv-85's hull is slightly different from Is-2's. Also, as you said, they have different cannons.

Y? is it so similare to the IS-2? After all if the mod is bigger than 2 Gigs than no one would get it. He should look at how do make the old stuff better and get rid of some of the worser stuff. I think we should make it our goal to not pass the 2 gig line and to improve on the older stuff instead...

if you dont want to play fh enought that you cant wait through 2 gigs of downloading digital joy, then play vanilla.

the idea is that it was a stopgap measure between the t34/85 and the is2. its armor proviede good protection from the p4H at all range and the panthers at longer ranges.

besides, how large do you think one model, its skin, code, and sound is gonna be? the size lies in the maps.

Its a KV-1 chassis with an IS-1 turret with the 85mm gun. more of just an improvement on the KV series then a stopgap but would still love to see it.

Sorry i didn't understand your priorities. I thought you wanted more people to play this mod.
