I have recently downloaded a mod called action battlefield and it's an ok mod. (nothing compared to fh though). Anyways, one thing that caught my eye about this mod was that on certain maps instead of having the fog everywhere, it would be clear until the game stopped rendering the view distance. Everything looked clearer and a lot sharper. That made me think; it would be awesome if FH had unlimited view distance! Then again, it would probably cause the worst lag possible...but it would still be cool to have the option when setting up a server to use in lan parties where it wouldn't lag as much. Anyways, just an idea that came to me...

Actually I've heard that fog/view distance doesn't affect lag or game performance. Mostly mappers put fog in for the sake of good gameplay. Well, now that I think of it, I don't know why mappers put fog in.

Just another off-the-wall idea: How about having rain effects in a level? Well, ok that would probably cause more of a lag problem than no fog, but it'd be cool...

AFAIK, view distance affects lag and game performance, fog distance doesn't. Fog is mostly put in so objects fade in, rather than being drawn in.

Viewing distance does infact cause your computer to go slower (lower number of frames per second). Fog however, does not (well, maybe a little, but not much anyway). What you're doing wrong here is mixing up lag (network lag) and Pc lag. A huge vieing distance would make your PC lag, not your network, so even if you did play on a LAN it would still lags a lot.

Oh ok. I knew it was something like that, just couldn't remember which was which. So what you're saying is that they could make the fog so far back its practically non-existant and it wouldn't lag? Probably not, but just checking to make sure.

you can just not have ANY fog on the map, you know. but then if something is halfway between being rendered and outside, you can see its jagged edges. fog is best when its the same as view distance, so the transition isnt so rough

Ya ya'll are right, I wasn't thinking it through. And also, as far as I can tell, the only reason fog is used at all is so you won't see everything being drawn in the distance (as judge pointed out), but also if you think about it, fog helps with the scaling of battles. Take Market Garden for instance: the true size of the operation was much much larger than the ingame one, so if you could see across the entire battlefield in the game, it's like saying you could see something like maybe hundreds of miles (I have no idea really, I just doubt you could see the whole thing). Very convenient for the game developers, eh?

The heavy fog in certain maps (Pavlov, Foy, Stalingrad) is there for a reason. Those maps are next to unplayable if the fog is removed.

In Desert Combat there's a map called El Alamein day 3, which have very long view distance. It's excellent for tank battles and I haven't noticed any lag there. What would be cool is have one Kursk tankbattle map with huge view distance. If the map is open field without much objects, there wouldn't be horrible performance drop.
