Pixel aiming... To those who doesn't know what it is, here's a short explanation: An ARTY gunner trains his crosshairs on a specific, easily recognizable point in the sky or terrain and hits a certain chokepoint or base spawn directly with each salvo, destroying valuable equipment and preventing the enemy from moving out of the area. On maps like Northwind and the finnish vs russian one, pixel aiming can be devastating. I've been subjected to it so many times that I've taken a "do it to them before they do it to you"-stance on the matter, and I consequently pound enemy artillery and bases before they can do the same to me. While some, including myself, would argue that it is not entirely unrealistic (anyone who knows a little bit about artillery will know that suppressive barrages are presighted and calculated well ahead of major offensives, etc), I would however say that it can be extremely disruptive for gameplay. So, my question to the devs are these: 1). Would it be possible to randomize cloud patterns on the maps? or even better: 2). Would it be possible to randomize the placement of fixed ARTY upon the start of the map, eg. like +/- 5 metres left or right. Any slight deviation like that would make it next to impossible to utilize pixel aiming...
Hmm, well I know some people do this, but I havn´t seen this as a major issue.
Far more anoying is that the 0.61 artillery bug still has not been fixed and often you can´t hear or see the damn shells exploding all around you.
thats because its a BF1942 bug
would it be possible to randomize the skybox loaded? (same fog color, of course). with similar skyboxes with only little difference pixelaiming could be rendered close to useless. it will only tell you the general height and direction, and it will be a lot to remember, making it even more useless.
I am a "pixel-shooter" myself, and as Ghost said, there is enough justification for it to be realistic.
However changing cloud spots won't help, cause, in particular on maps like Nordwind and Karelia (that you mentioned), i aim by tree-tops, not clouds. And the mobile arty can be moved (which it usually is) to an easy to remember position before beginning the pixel-shooting.
The only thing that could be adversely is the fixed arty (howitzers, etc), but they are already at a disadvantga cause they are fixed and the enemy knows where it is.
Furthermore, that is exactly how it was used in RL: the coordinates would be calculated, and then the peice would elavated and rotated a certain number of degrees. And that's what we do, but since we don't have a degree gauge, we measure our distance by elevating along the tree lines and moving across thier tops
On Berlin outskirts Moldie used to get accused of pixel shooting, but in actuality I was in front german flag bunker and using binocs and spotting for him since Russian base was just barely visible from there. I have also seen people get kicked for "cheating" on same map while I was spotting for them.
Easiest way I saw to fic it would have been make the Russian base easier to get out of and have local vehicle random spawns.
No offence.. but "pixelshooting".. is for nerds. You don't play the game for fun any longer. You play it for your stats.

I don't play the game for stats, when i spawn and die 15 times just to get rid of the enemy KT camper in our base (while instead i could have spawned elsewhere and forgot about him, and went to increase my score) But if you never pixelshot, then you don't know how fun it actually is :naughty: . Besides, firstly i am doing my team a favour by suppressing the enemy flag/armor/movement. Secondly, i am using arty the way it was supposed to be used -- long range weapon, not close combat "big-boom-weapon"
Pixelshooting in pubs? I see uses for it in clan matches and such, but doing it in a pub is screaming scorewhore. And it is not "realistic" by any means. While artillery can be dialed in, there has to be a spotter to do it. Not just run, man the arty, aim at the cloudspot, and keep your enemys in their bases before half of them even spawn in. A true cloudspotter can render a whole map pointless. I remeber just some of the spots we used to have when I played in Cal Bf1942. An example would be Kursk. If you start german, you can jump in the panzers and take out both of the allied planes across the map before any pilots can even reach them. Once this is done allied have no planes, and it turns the map into a russian rape fest. And basically every map has something similar to this.
If you ask me it is realistic reason beeing is you played the maps over and over and over and over again repeated times whereas in real life these battles were fought again and again and again. Its simply something done from expirence and thats it. In real life if you had an arty pievce that was in that exact spot every single time and you had fought this battle multible times you would instictively know where to aim from shear expirence. Hey dont get me wrong now I aint saying I do like it but if you play a battle that many times and everything is in the exact same spot every single time your just gonna know where it is. I myself would like to see abit more of a randomized spawning for arty so it cannot be done and would add more enviroment to the battlefield
