OK, I have a minor beef with the whole "NO SSM AT ALL NEVER EVAR EVER".

I understand the issues behind not wanting to SSM, I totally see the logic with not wanting to see M36s in the Western Desert and that sort of thing.

It's also clear to me that 90% of what's bound to get modded is crap.

However, I maintain that there are always going to be minor tweaks where experience shows changing a certain vehicle, adding a flag, modifying bleed conditions, whatnot, really improves gameplay. Furthermore, there will always be bugs (especially in FH 0.7, now that there are no official fixes coming out.)

A few examples for this that I've seen make things really good:

-Fixing flag #1 on Invasion of the Philippines -Sinking the Rheinuebung flags to avoid collisions with ships -Ditching the stuka kits on Fall Gelb -Removing the engineer kit on Foy -Adding a flag in the N. village on El Alamein (not actually played this one, but it sounds like an ace idea.)

I know that on certain server discussion boards, this sort of thing has led to a lot of personal animosity (you know who you are, that's not the point of this suggestion.) I also understand that SSM'ing can easily get out of hand; I can think of a gajillion minor tweaks I'd like to see, such as adjusting the starting conditions on Adak to be less against the Japanese. All of us can, and again, most of these ideas would be impractical or totally change the map (and not always for the better.)

FH2, while wildly anticipated, will also reveal gremlins that do not pop up in the organized beta sessions, but which will only take pubbie play to manifest themselves. I'm sure the mappers will have learned a lot from the FH experience, but still, nothing's perfect.

My suggestion is, thus, to allow the FH2 dev team to consider more feedback from us lowly pubbies in terms of making minor gameplay tweaks to existing maps. If I were to show up with a concrete suggestion on how to change a map, with reasons why it would be better my way, and an actually changed map (not just "I want xyz, will you please do it for me?") in hand, would your lordships maybe be willing to "review" SSMs and approve / not approve them?

Does this make any sense?

But what if FH2 servers will become like HoTDP? With Fh2 being new and all, I suggest that if you have a idea of a better way to do a map, report it to the devs instead! With the 16 32 & 64 player modes on all maps server just might choose what ever they like the best. Btw I hate ssm..

The point is that let's say you run a server. You find something annoying that could be improved on but don't want to wait for an official update 27 months from now, and you don't want people to yell at you and give you a shitty reputation like "certain servers."

Frankly, I respect the wishes of devs and mappers regarding mods to maps, but I think the way it currently is done is way too inflexible.

My idea was geared to giving server operators a bit of leeway in terms of fixing stuff. Currently we have

-DON'T TOUCH IT, NO YOU FOOL! -Screw you, I'm doing what I want with maps I don't care if it's stupid

I'm proposing adding

-Ok, let's have a look, okay, looks somewhat reasonable

Statements like "I hate SSM" don't really help the issue; maybe if you said "I hate stupid SSM that ruin gameplay because they're badly considered and not reviewed" or "I hate SSM because it does not respect dev/mapper wishes", it'd be more reasonable.

Personally I love it. However the Water Buffaloes ruin Charlie sector. I think it spreads the allies out and consequently Allies can never get over the cliffs. Lets face it FH1 is dying a slow painfully slow death (But'd die quickly with an FH2 release...) I like SSM because a little variety is alot of fun!!!

To my knowledge, there were no LVTs used at Omaha Beach -- this is exactly the kind of stupidity I'd like to avoid.

It is very annoying for certain SSMs. Take HOTDP. You get the Junou II on Charlie Sector, in addition to the Liberty Ship and an LCT armed with a Sherman POA and a Sherman Firefly, with a few Water Buffalos tossed in just to add some flavor. On the German team you have a PzIIIN w/Schurzen, and a PzIVH. There's also an MG34 spawnable kit. Its balanced but it's not fun at all. The Nazi server. On Goodwood the British have everything normal, but the Germans get two PzIVH, a Tiger, a King Tiger, a Jagdpanther, and a Panther G. It's not balanced at all. Somehow the devs need to block SSMing except for "Dev Approved" SSMs.

When FH2 comes out we probably won't be juggles just between 3 different populated servers so it's safe to say that if SSM makes the leap, you'll most likely have enough regular servers out there to hang out in instead.

Is serverside modding even possible with the BF2 engine ? As far as I know not even Hotfixing a map is possible or not that simple anymore.
